Auggies fall 2-0 to Pipers

BOXSCORE BOXSCORE

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Giving up a goal in each half, the Augsburg College women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Hamline University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Saturday morning at Paterson Field.

Augsburg (8-7-1 overall, 4-3-1 MIAC) was outshot by an 8-5 margin by Hamline (9-4-3 overall, 4-3-2 MIAC) in a contest between two teams contending for a spot in the four-team MIAC postseason playoffs.

"Despite having the ball most of the game we struggled to break Hamline down in the final third," said Augsburg head coach Mike Navarre. "After Hamline found the net with a long shot in the first half, they did well to make sure they had many players behind the ball to defend."

Izzy Benjamin-Alvarado scored for the Pipers in the 28th minute, assisted by Brienne Garside, and Jordan Sammons scored following a corner kick by Hannah Plagman in the 58th minute.

Courtney Gamrath (SR, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) had two shots for the Auggies. Katie Gajewski (SO, Wausau, Wis./Wausau East HS) had three saves in goal for the Auggies. Liz Stock had three saves in goal for Hamline.

With a week remaining in the regular season, Augsburg sits in a tie for fifth place with 16 league points (three points for a win, one for a tie), one point behind fourth-place St. Olaf.

Augsburg has its regular-season home finale on Wednesday (10/26) at 4 p.m., hosting Concordia-Moorhead at Edor Nelson Field as part of a soccer doubleheader, with the men's game to follow at 6:15 p.m.

"Despite the loss, we are still in the thick of the playoff race," Navarre said. "Our game against Concordia is obviously a huge one. We will be ready."
