Auggies sweep Wildcats

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg College volleyball team cruised to a straight-set victory (25-22, 25-23, 25-23) over St. Catherine in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match Friday evening at Si Melby Hall. 

The win marks the Auggies' (10-5 overall, 4-1 MIAC) fifth consecutive victory, and keeps the team tied for first place in the MIAC standings at the midway point of the conference race. With the loss, St. Catherine falls to 13-7 overall, and 2-3 in the MIAC this season.

'I'm really happy with the win tonight," said Augsburg head coach Jane Becker. "St. Kate's served as aggressively as any team we've faced so far this season and I was happy with the way we responded. We had a great crowd on hand as well which was made for a fun environment."
 
Augsburg led wire-to-wire in the first set, jumping out to a quick 12-4 lead, before holding on for a 25-22 victory.

The second set featured 11 ties and seven lead changes before Augsburg was able to pull away late to earn the 25-23 win. In the third set, St. Catherine held a three-point lead late in the match before the Auggies rallied to earn the win 25-23.

Micha Sater (JR, Fridley, Minn./Centennial HS) led the Augsburg attack as she recorded 15 kills and a .323 hitting percentage to go along with eight digs in the match. Colleen Ourada (SO, Omaha, Neb./Mercy HS) added 12 kills with a .300 hitiing percentage as well for Augsburg, while Jamila Lee (JR, Richfield, Minn.) added eight kills and one block in the match.

Nikolene Miller (JR, Tomahawk, Wis.) and Tabby Roh (FY, La Crosse, Wis./Central HS) added five kills and two blocks each for Augsburg.

Setter Emily McCourt (SO, Sun Prairie, Wis.) led Augsburg with 39 assists and a team-high three aces in the match.

Augsburg defensive specialist Katelyn Berens (SO, Jordan, Minn./Prior Lake HS) recorded a team-high 15 digs, while Amy Jo Opsal (SR, North Mankato, Minn./St. Clair HS) and Mackensie Menke (FY, Prior Lake, Minn./Shakopee HS) recorded nine and seven digs respectively. 

The Auggies return to action on Saturday (10/8), as they travel to St. Peter, Minn. to face Gustavus Adolphus College in a MIAC match. The match is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. tomorrow at the Lund Center.
