Cory Polta (SR, Spring Lake Park, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS) and
Tyler Schmidt (JR, Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS) led the Augsburg College men's basketball team to a 91-55 victory over North Central University in a nonconference contest on Tuesday night at Clark Danielson Gymnasium.
Polta finished with 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting with three blocked shots, while Schmidt also recorded 16 points, including a 4-of-6 performance from beyond the arc to lead Augsburg College (2-0 overall) to a victory over the North Central Rams.
Andy Grzesiak-Grimm (SR, Wyoming, Minn./St. Francis HS) led all players with a game-high 10 rebounds while adding 12 points and two blocked shots.
Eren Cur (JR, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) posted career-highs in both points and rebounds, scoring 11 points and pulling down seven boards.
North Central (0-4 overall) was led by Andrew Berndt, who finished the night with 28 points, on 10-of-15 shooting from the floor.
After a back-and-forth opening five minutes of play, the Auggies used two key runs, a 12-2 run over a four-and-a-half minute stretch and 16-2 run over a seven minute stretch to build a 41-22 lead at the intermission. The first half lead proved too much for the Rams to overcome as the Auggies coasted to the big win.
For the game, Augsburg shot 56.3 percent (36-of-64), while holding the Rams to just 43.5 percent (20-of-46). The Auggies claimed a 44-20 advantage on the boards, including 18 offensive rebounds. Thirteen Auggies saw action in the game, while 11 figured into the scoring.
Augsburg returns to action on Wednesday (11/30) when it hosts St. John's University in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
