BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS --
Andy Grzesiak-Grimm (SR, Wyoming, Minn./St. Francis HS) recorded his second double-double of the season, but Augsburg College struggled to put the ball in the basket and fell 58-50 to Central College (Iowa) in a nonconference men's basketball contest on Saturday afternoon at Si Melby Hall.
Grzesiak-Grimm led all players with his 16-point, 11-rebound effort as the Auggies fell to 5-2 overall. Also scoring in double-figures for Augsburg was
Andy Seidlitz (SO, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS), who finished with 10 points and three rebounds.
Central (7-1 overall) was led by Jack Burns, who finished with 15 points and seven rebounds.
Augsburg began the game scoring on four of its opening six possessions and led the Dutch 8-6 after a three-pointer by
Tyler Schmidt (JR, Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS) at the 16:37 mark. The Augsburg offense hit a cold streak and wasn't able to convert its next basket until a
Brett Sorenson (SR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) layup at the 11:05 mark. The Auggies' shooting woes continued and they went into the locker room trailing 35-22 at the half.
For the second consecutive game, Augsburg made a late rally and fell just short. Augsburg's
Noah Veach (SO, Grand Haven, Mich.) converted on an old fashioned three-point play to pull the Auggies within six, making the score 52-46 with 33 seconds to play. Augsburg was able to score on layups by
Anthony Humphrey (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) and Seidlitz but a 6-for-6 free throw performance from the Dutch sealed up the 58-50 win.
For the game, Augsburg shot a season-low 30.2 percent (19-of-63) and was only able to connect on 7.7 percent (1-of-13) from behind the arc, while the Dutch hit 42.6 percent (20-of-47) of their shots. The Auggies claimed a 40-38 advantage on the boards and were able to force 15 Central turnovers, while only committing 10.
Augsburg returns to action on Thursday (12/15) when it hosts Bethany Lutheran in a nonconference contest at Si Melby Hall.
