Serenae Levine (SR, Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) led the Augsburg College women's basketball team to a 60-54 victory over Cornell College in nonconference action on Monday night at the Richard and Norma Small Multi-Sport Center.
With the win, Augsburg moves to 5-3 overall and 3-0 in nonconference play, marking the first time the Auggies finished 3-0 in nonconference play since women's athletics joined the MIAC in 1982-83.
Levine tied a game-high in points with 14, on a 4-for-7 shooting performance from the field and 5-of-6 night at the free thrown line. Also scoring in double-figures for Augsburg was
Brittany Zins (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) and
Brittany Dyshaw (JR, Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS), who finished with 11 points apiece, and
Nikki Borkhuis (SR, Watertown, S.D./Watertown HS), who tied a season-high with 10 points and five rebounds.
Cornell (4-5 overall) was led by Rikki Mulloy and Taylor Dicus, who scored 14 and 12 points respectively.
The very evenly matched contest saw 10 tied scores, eight lead changes and a 23-23 score at the intermission. Augsburg used a 12-2 run over a three-minute span in the second-half to gain its largest lead of the evening, a 47-37 advantage. Cornell battled back with a run of its own and tied things up with just 3:22 to play. Augsburg was able to shoot 11-of-12 over the final two-and-a-half minutes to earn the hard-fought 60-54 victory.
For the game, Augsburg shot 38.3 percent (18-of-47) from the field, while Cornell connected on 41.7 percent (20-of-48) of its shots, while the Rams claimed a 36-29 advantage on the boards. The difference in the game came down to free throws and turnovers. Augsburg was able to convert a season-high 21-of-25 from the free-throw line and forced 22 Cornell turnovers, while committing a season-low 13.
Augsburg is idle for the remainder of the holiday break and returns to action on Monday, Jan. 2 at 7:30 p.m. for a contest against MIAC rival Hamline University in St. Paul.
