Polta spurs Auggies past Concordia

MINNEAPOLIS -- A career-high 27 points from Cory Polta (SR, Spring Lake Park, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS) led Augsburg College to a 75-59 win over Concordia College-Moorhead in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Si Melby Hall. With the win, Augsburg remains unbeaten with a 4-0 overall record (2-0 MIAC), while Concordia falls to 2-4 overall (1-1 MIAC).

Polta lead all players with a game- and career-high 27 points, connecting on 11-of-15 from the floor while adding 10 rebounds. Andy Grzesiak-Grimm (SR, Wyoming, Minn./St. Francis HS) also had a strong afternoon for the Auggies, finishing with 19 points, nine rebounds and two assists. Parker Hines (SO, Lakeville, Minn./Minnehaha Academy HS) continued to captain the Augsburg offense, recording a career-high 12 assists, while adding five points and a steal.

Concordia was led by Dewon McKenzie, who finished with 22 points on a 9-of-14 shooting performance.

The Auggies scored layps from Brett Sorenson (SR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) and Grzesiak-Grimm to take a quick 4-0 lead in the opening minute of action. The two teams battled for the remainder of the first half with the Auggies not quite able to extend their lead to double-digits. Augsburg used a three-pointer by Hines and a layup by Polta to claim the final five points of the half and take a 34-25 lead into the locker room at the intermission.

Augsburg came out on a 9-2 run to start the second half, which included a pair of dunks by Grzesiak-Grimm and a three-pointer by Sorenson. The solid play of the Auggies wouldn't let the Cobbers get closer than 14 as the Auggies cruised on to the 75-59 victory.

For the game, Augsburg shot 48.3 percent (29-of-60), while Concordia connected on 41.8 percent (23-of-55) of its shots. The Auggies held a commanding 37-26 advantage on the boards and were able to claim a season-high 23 assists.

Augsburg returns to action on Monday (12/5) when it hosts Bethel University, while the Cobbers are off until Wednesday (12/7) when they host St. Mary's University in Moorhead.
