Augsburg falls in OT in season finale

MINNEAPOLIS -- Tracee Schrank (SO, Reedsburg, Wis.) hit a three-pointer with five seconds remaining in regulation to force an extra session, but St. Catherine University was able to hit a jumper with one second left in overtime to claim a 73-71 victory over Augsburg College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at the Butler Center.

Augsburg, which finishes the season with a 5-20 overall record (4-18 MIAC), was led offensively by three players in double figures. Serenae Levine (JR, Eden Prairie, Minn.) finished with a game-high 21 points, her third 20-plus scoring performance of the season, and added 11 rebounds for the double-double. Casey Gintner (FY, Minneapolis, Minn./St. Anthony Village HS) came off the bench to score a career-high 17 points and added four rebounds and an assist, while Schrank finished with 15 points and four rebounds.

St. Catherine (6-19 overall, 5-17 MIAC) had a very balanced scoring attack, finishing with six players in double figures, led by Sonja Ellingson, who recorded 17 points and 10 rebounds.

The afternoons contest was a hotly contested affair from start to finish with neither team ever able to extend its lead to double digits. All three periods featured a last second shot. Levine connected on a three-pointer to end the first half giving the Auggies a 28-27 lead at the intermission, while Schrank hit a three-pointer with five seconds left in the second half to tie the game 65-65 and force the overtime.

Augsburg's Brittany Zins (SO, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) hit a jumper with 27 seconds left in overtime to tie the game at 71-71 but it was St. Kate's that would connect on the final shot of the afternoon. The Wildcats' Laura Kalbfell missed a jumper with six seconds left but was able to get her own rebound and put it back with one second on the clock to secure the victory for St. Catherine.

For the game, Augsburg shot 35.5 percent (27-of-76), while St. Catherine connected on 39.4 percent (26-of-66) of its shots. The Wildcats claimed a 51-41 advantage on the boards, while the Auggies won the turnover battle, forcing 19, while only committing 13.
