Volleyball scores 3-1 win over SMU

MINNEAPOLIS -- Micha Sater (JR, Fridley, Minn./Centennial HS) recorded a career-high 16 kills as the Augsburg College volleyball team scored an impressive four-set victory (25-23, 26-24, 19-25, 27-25) over Saint Mary's University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon at Si Melby Hall.

With the win, the Auggies (6-5 overall) evened up their conference record at 1-1, while the Cardinals dropped to 7-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

"This was a great example of what the competition in our conference is going to be like, game in and game out," said Augsburg head coach Jane Becker following the match. "Saint Mary's is a talented and well-coached team, and I was glad to see us compete with a greater sense of urgency today. We'll obviously need to maintain that throughout the rest of the season for us to accomplish the goals we've set for ourselves."


The match featured a total of 38 ties and 20 lead changes between the two teams. Trailing 21-23 late in the first set, Augsburg rallied to score the final four points of the game to take an early lead in the match. The teams would go on to split the next two sets, before the Auggies pulled out a thrilling 27-25 win in the fourth set to earn the victory.

In addition to her 16 kills, Sater also recorded a .217 hitting percentage, eight digs, and one block.

Augsburg setter Emily McCourt (SO, Sun Prairie, Wis.) recorded a match-high 41 assists, as well as 13 digs and a service ace.

Other top Augsburg performers included Colleen Ourada (SO, Omaha, Neb./Mercy HS) and Nikolene Miller (JR, Tomahawk, Wis.), who each recorded 11 kills in the match. Ourada added eight digs and five blocks, while Miller recorded seven blocks.

Tabby Roh (FY, La Crosse, Wis./Central HS) continued her solid play of late, as she recorded a team high eight blocks to go along with six kills.

Katelyn Berens (SO, Jordan, Minn./Prior Lake HS) recorded a team-high 14 digs, while Mackensie Menke (FY, Prior Lake, Minn./Shakopee HS) and Amy Jo Opsal (SR, North Mankato, Minn./St. Clair HS) added nine and eight digs respectively. Both Menke and Opsal recorded two aces in the match as well.

The Auggies return to action this Wednesday with a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match against Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
