Auggies edged late by Grinnell

BOXSCORE GAME BOXSCORE

GRINNELL, Iowa -- Bri Clark (JR, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) scored both goals for Augsburg College, including a goal with 3:25 left in the game, but a Grinnell College goal with 2:45 left gave the Pioneers a 3-2 win over the Auggies in a nonconference women's soccer game on Saturday at Grinnell.

Trailing 1-0 at halftime, Clark scored her first goal on an assist from Molly Allen (FY, Stillwater, Minn.) in the 63rd minute, and after the Pioneers went ahead on a penalty kick goal in the 77th minute, Clark scored again on a goal from Bri Dorale (JR, Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) and Lindsey Niederhaus (SR, Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) in the 87th minute to tie the game for the Auggies (1-1 overall).

But Grinnell (1-1 overall) rallied back quickly, scoring the game-winner just 40 seconds after Clark's tying goal, as Patty Murphy-Geiss scored her second goal of the game. Cynthia Dominguez had the Pioneers' first goal in the ninth minute.

"One of the toughest losses I can remember. Bri Clark had two beautiful goals and we played some quality soccer, and yet we still came up short," said Augsburg coach Mike Navarre. "Sometimes a couple of untimely mistakes can lead to goals and help determine the outcome. Credit Grinnell for finding a way to win despite being outshot and not having the much of the run of play. Credit also goes to Grinnell's goalkeeper who was outstanding, making several great saves."

Augsburg outshot Grinnell by a 26-15 margin, including a 17-7 advantage in the second half. Augsburg goalkeeper Katie Gajewski (SO, Wausau, Wis./Wausau East HS) had seven saves, while Grinnell goalkeeper Jordan Young had nine saves.

Allen had six shots for Augsburg, while Clark had four shots. Dorale and Olivia Muyres (FY, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) had five shots each.

Augsburg has its home opener on Thursday (9/8) at 5 p.m., hosting Whitman (Wash.) at Edor Nelson Field.

"We will regroup and be ready to go in our home opener against Whitman on Thursday," Navarre said.
