BOXSCORE BOXSCORE
MINNEAPOLIS --
Olivia Muyres (FY, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) scored both Augsburg College goals, as the Auggies scored a 2-0 win over Whitman College (Wash.) in a nonconference women's soccer game on Thursday evening at Edor Nelson Field.
Augsburg (2-1-0 overall) was keyed by a six-save shutout performance by goalkeeper
Katie Gajewski (SO, Wausau, Wis./Wausau East HS). In claiming her fifth career shutout and second of the season, she made several dramatic saves on Whitman (1-1-0 overall) shots to preserve the win.
"We had a solid performance tonight from
Katie Gajewski in goal," said Augsburg coach
Mike Navarre. "Both of our goalkeepers have worked hard to improve their game and their improvement has made our defense stronger."
Muyres scored her first goal of the game in the 17th minute, finishing a long sprint off a feed from
Olivia Faison (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) with a shot across the box and into the net. Her second goal came in the 69th minute, as she tapped in a drive across the box from
Bri Clark (JR, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS), who had received a downfield feed from
Courtney Gamrath (SR, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS).
"A great win tonight. Whitman is a solid team," Navarre said. "We didn't play our best soccer, but we were opportunistic and finished well. Clearly we still have to get better, but the players are hungry to improve so we will take that energy and continue to progress. Olivia and
Bri Clark were dangerous tonight getting forward, and
Courtney Gamrath did a great job playmaking for us in the second half."
Augsburg's defense -- starters
Devon Ellena (JR, Wales, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS),
Lindsey Niederhaus (SR, Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS),
Alekzandra Miller (SO, St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS) and
Brooke Vroman (FY, Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS), along with substitute Faison -- protected goalkeeper Gajewski throughout the game. Whitman had 14 corner kicks and and outshot Augsburg by a 22-9 margin.
Muyres had four shots for the Auggies, while Clark had three shots. Amy Hasson and Hallie Swan had five shots apiece for Whitman, and Lauren Brougham had two saves in goal for Whitman.
Augsburg returns to action on Saturday (9/10) at 7 p.m., hosting Wisconsin-Eau Claire at Edor Nelson Field.
"We face a tough test on Saturday with UW-Eau Claire," Navarre said. "UWEC is always among the best in the region, so it will be another opportunity for us to play a quality opponent as we look to continue to prepare and improve for our conference season."
