Grzesiak-Grimm leads Auggies to 65-61 win over SMU

BOXSCORE WINONA, Minn. --  Andy Grzesiak-Grimm (SR, Wyoming, Minn./St. Francis HS) led all players, recording his fourth consecutive double-double as the Augsburg College men's basketball team earned a 65-61 victory over Saint Mary's University on Saturday afternoon at the SMU Field House.

Grzesiak-Grimm posted a game-high 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead Augsburg (9-4 overall, 6-2 MIAC). Grzesiak-Grimm shot 8-for-9 from the floor, while adding two blocked shots. Also scoring in double-figures were Cory Polta (SR, Spring Lake Park, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS) and Tyler Schmidt (JR, Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS). Polta finished with 18 points and nine rebounds, while Schmidt scored 10 points and finished with three assists.

Saint Mary's (2-11 overall, 2-6 MIAC) finished with four players in double-figures led by Michael Burfeind, who scored 15 points, three assists and a pair of steals.

The game featured 13 lead changes, with neither team leading by more than five points and went right down to the wire. Saint Mary's held a 28-27 advantage at the intermission but the Auggies showed composure in the second-half and claimed the narrow victory over the Cardinals.

With 2:12 remaining, Schmidt hit a lay-up to tie things up at 61-61. The Auggies hit 4-of-4 from the free throw line in the final 44 seconds to seal the 65-61 win for Augsburg.

Augsburg shot 51.1 percent (24-of-47) from the field while the Cardinals connected on 42.3 percent (22-of-52) of their shots. The Auggies claimed a 32-28 advantage on the boards and were able to get the the free throw line 24 time, compared to just 16 attempts for Saint Mary's.

Augsburg and Saint Mary's return to action on Monday (1/16) with Augsburg hosting Carleton and Saint Mary's traveling to St. Paul to take on Hamline.
