Auggies fall 57-49 to St. Mary's

BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- Serenae Levine (SR, Eden Prairie, Minn.) scored 10 points with eight assists and three steals, but her Augsburg College women's basketball team dropped a 57-49 decision to visiting St. Mary's University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Saturday afternoon at Si Melby Hall.

Brittany Dyshaw (JR, Eagan, Minn.) had eight points and two blocked shots, and Abbey Luger (FY, Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul HS) had eight points and three rebounds for Augsburg (7-6 overall, 4-6 MIAC).

St. Mary's (6-7 overall, 6-4 MIAC) was paced by Courtney Euerle (SO, Litchfield, Minn.), who scored 14 points, and Jessica Thone (JR, Woodbury, Minn.), who had 13 points, seven assists, five steals and five rebounds. Brittany Begrowicz (SR, Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West HS) had 11 points and three rebounds, and Jamie Stefely (JR, Lisle, Ill./St. Francis HS) had eight points and eight rebounds.

The game was an close one most of the way, with 13 lead changes and five ties. But St. Mary's used a 10-0 run midway through the second half to take a 43-34 lead with 7:43 remaining, a lead the Cardinals would not relinquish. The Cardinals led by as many as 12 points down the stretch.

St. Mary's outrebounded Augsburg by a 36-23 margin in the game, and the Cardinals scored 26 points in-the-paint, compared to 18 for Augsburg. St. Mary's shot 46.3 percent (19-of-41) from the field, while Augsburg shot 34.0 percent (18-of-53).

Kendra Ware (SO, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo HS) scored seven points with two assists for the Auggies, while Nikki Borkhuis (SR, Watertown, S.D.) scored six points with eight rebounds, two assists and two steals. Lexi Thompson (SR, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) had six points and three steals.

Both teams return to action on Monday (1/16) at 7:30 p.m., with Augsburg traveling to face Carleton and St. Mary's hosting Hamline.
