Polta leads Auggies past Carleton

BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- Cory Polta (SR, Spring Lake Park, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS) scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Augsburg College mens' basketball team to a 66-52 victory in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Monday night at Si Melby Hall.

Polta led Augsburg (10-4 overall, 7-2 MIAC) with 22 points, connecting on 10-of-18 from the floor, while adding six rebounds and a pair of blocks. Andy Grzesiak-Grimm (SR, Wyoming, Minn./St. Francis HS) posted his fourth-consecutive double-double, scoring 15 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. Also finishing in double-figures for Augsburg wasTyler Schmidt (JR, Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS), who scored 12 points and tied a career-high with five assists.

Carleton (6-8 overall, 3-6 MIAC) finished with three players in double figures, led by Scott Theisen (JR, Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS), who finished with 14 points, five assists and four rebounds.

The first 14 minutes of action saw five tied scores and four lead changes. The Auggies then went on an 11-0 run over a 3:06 span, giving Augsburg the momentum and a 32-21 lead with just under three minutes to play in the first half. Augsburg stretched its lead to as many as 13 points before taking a 38-27 lead into the locker room at the intermission.

Augsburg continued to dominate on the boards in the second-half, which it used to control the tempo. The Auggies led by as many as 17 points before going on to earn the 66-52 win.

Augsburg shot 48.9 percent (22-of-45) for the game, while the Knights connected on 41.8 percent (25-of-52) of their shots. The Auggies dominated on the boards, outrebounding Carleton 34-16 and claimed a 36-16 advantage in points in the paint. Augsburg was also able to hit on 10-of-13 from the free-throw line, while holding Carleton to just 2-of-2.

With the win, Augsburg moves into a three-way tie for the Conference lead with St. Thomas and Gustavus. Augsburg and Carleton both return to action on Wednesday (1/18) with the Auggies traveling to Collegeville to take on St. John's University, while the Knights head down to Winona to play Saint Mary's University.
