Lexi Thompson (SR, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) scored a season-high 10 points but the Augsburg College women's basketball team was edged 63-58 by Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Monday night at Gus Young Court.
Augsburg (11-8 overall, 8-8 MIAC) was led by a trio of players in double-figures. Thompson finished the night with 10 points, three rebounds and a pair of assists and steals.
Serenae Levine (SR, Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) and
Brittany Zins (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) also finished with 10 points apiece, with Levine adding five rebounds and three assists, while Zins pulled down four rebounds and added a pair of steals.
Gustavus (16-3 overall, 14-2 MIAC) was led by the duo of Colleen Ruane and Abby Rothenbuehler. Ruane recorded a game-high 17 points, while Rothenbuehler posted the only double-double of the night, finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The Auggies struggled to convert offensively in the first-half, shooting only 29.6 percent (8-of-27) from the field and found themselves trailing 33-20 at the intermission. Augsburg turned up the defensive pressure in the second-half and forced 18 Gustie turnovers (26 for the game), which it converted into 17 points (21 for the game).
The Auggies outscored Gustavus 38-30 in the second-frame and nearly completed the second-half rally.
Abbey Luger (FY, Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul HS), single-handedly went on a 7-0 run that cut the Gustavus lead to 43-34 but the Gusties were able to extend their lead to back to double-digits before the Auggies could put together another run. Augsburg scored the final four points of the game and did not allow Gustavus to score during the final 1:38 of action, but the comeback fell just short as the Gusties hung on for the win.
For the game, Augsburg shot 36.7 percent (22-of-60) from the field, while the Gusties connected on 47.9 percent (23-of-48) of their shots. Gustavus claimed a 41-25 advantage on the boards, but the Auggies won the turnover battle forcing 26, while only committing 17.
Augsburg and Gustavus return to action on Wednesday (2/1) with Augsburg hosting Hamline University and Gustavus traveling to Northfield to take on St. Olaf College.
