Tyler Schmidt (JR, Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS) posted his third consecutive 20-point game to lead the Augsburg College men's basketball team to a 86-50 victory over Macalester College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night at Si Melby Hall.
With the win, Augsburg moves to 7-3 overall (4-1 MIAC), while Macalester falls to 1-10 overall (1-5 MIAC).
Augsburg was led by Schmidt, who finished with 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the floor, while adding five assists and four steals. Also finishing in double-figures for the Auggies were
Andy Grzesiak-Grimm (SR, Wyoming, Minn./St. Francis HS),
Cory Polta (SR, Spring Lake Park, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS) and
Noah Veach (SO, Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS).
Grzesiak-Grimm finished with 15 points and nine rebounds, while Polta recorded 16 points and three blocked shots. Veach recorded a career-high 11 points on a perfect shooting night, finishing 3-of-3 from the floor and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line. Fourteen different Auggies saw action in the contest and 10 figured into the scoring.
Macalester was led by Pierce Peters, who finished with 20 points, including a perfect 9-of-9 free-throw performance, while adding six rebounds and a pair of steals.
The Auggies began the game on a 21-0 run and held the Scots to just three points over the first 15 minutes of action. The Auggies took a 48-16 advantage into the locker room at the intermission and cruised on to the 86-50 win. Augsburg was able to take advantage of its sharpshooters, connecting on 7-of-15 from beyond the arc, while holding the Scots to just 1-of-6.
For the game, Augsburg shot 63.0 percent (34-of-54) from the floor, while holding Macalester to just 31.0 percent (17-of-54). The Auggies and Scots finished with an identical 30 rebounds, but Augsburg claimed a 24-12 advantage in points off turnovers and a 46-30 advantage in points in the paint.
Augsburg and Macalester both return to action on Saturday (1/7) at 3 p.m., with Augsburg playing a key MIAC contest at the University of St. Thomas, while Macalester plays host to St. Mary's University.
