Nikki Borkhuis (SR, Watertown, S.D./Watertown HS) led the Augsburg College women's basketball team with nine points and three steals but the University of St. Thomas used a second-half rally to overcome the Auggies 49-41 in a hard fought Minnesota Intercollegiate Atheltic Conference contest on Saturday afternoon at Shoenecker Arena.
With the loss, the Auggies fall to 6-5 overall (3-5 MIAC), while the Tommies remain unbeaten in conference play 8-0 and move to 10-1 overall.
Borkhuis scored nine points on 4-of-9 shooting from the floor, while adding three steals and a blocked shot.
Brittany Zins (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) also finished with nine points for the Auggies and added three rebounds.
Brittany Dyshaw (JR, Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) pulled down a team-high six rebounds and added eight points.
St. Thomas was led by duo of Maggie Weiers and Taylor Young, who finished with 18 and 17 points respectively.
After leading 19-14 at the half, Augsburg was not able to keep up with a tough St. Thomas defense and fell 49-41 to the MIAC-unbeaten Tommies. Augsburg trailed 43-38 with just under two and a half minuest to play but the Tommies hit 6-of-6 from the free throw line to hold off the up-and-coming Auggies.
For the game, Augsburg was held to a season-low 28.3 percent (15-of-53) from the floor, while St. Thomas connected on 37.8 percent (14-of-37) of its shots. St. Thomas claimed a 40-27 advantage on the boards but the Auggies won the turnover battle, forcing 24, while only committing 15. The Tommies were also able to connect on 20-of-27 from the free throw line, while Augsburg was only able to convert on 8-of-11.
Augsburg and St. Thomas both return to action on Wednesday (1/11), with Augsburg hosting St. Olaf College and St. Thomas traveling to Northfield to take on Carleton College.
