Nikolene Miller (SR, Tomahawk, Wis.) claimed a match-best 12 kills and added two blocks as the Augsburg College volleyball team cruised to a three-set sweep (25-15, 25-23, 25-15) over Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foe Macalester College on Friday evening at Si Melby Hall.
The Auggies (12-10 overall, 3-4 MIAC) used a late 7-0 run late in the first set to earn a 25-15 win and an early lead in the match. Both teams traded points early in the second set before Macalester (7-16 overall, 0-7 MIAC) took an 18-13 lead midway through the set. The Auggies responded, however, by winning 12 out of the final 17 points in the set to win by a score of 25-23. The Auggies fought back from an early deficit again in the third set, winning by a score of 25-15 to earn the match triumph over the Scots.
Miller, who currently ranks first in the conference in blocks -per-set average, hit a team-best .579 to go along with her 12 kills and two blocks.
Ashley Peper (FY, Bloominton, Minn./Jefferson HS) added nine kills, eight digs and a career-high three service aces for Augsburg, while
Micha Sater (SR, Fridley, Minn./Centennial HS) and
Tabby Roh (SO, LaCrosse, Wis.) added eight kills each.
Emily McCourt (JR, Sun Prairie, Wis.) claimed a match-best 36 assists and four digs for the Auggies, while defensive specialist
Emma Sievers (SO, St. Paul, Minn./Cretin Derham Hall) and
Mackensie Menke (SO, Prior Lake, Minn./Shakopee HS) each recorded eight digs.
For the Scots, Laura Avena (JR, Cesis, Latvia/Gimnasium #1) claimed a team-high 10 kills and three service aces, while defensive specialist Glasha Marcon (SR, Richmond, Calif./Albany) recorded a team-high 12 digs.
Augsburg returns to action this Tuesday (10/16) with a non-conference home match against Crown College. Tuesday is "Think Pink" night at Si Melby Hall, where fans are encouraged to wear pink in an effort to raise awareness and support for the Susan G. Komen For The Cure Foundation and the fight against breast cancer.
