Auggies start season with win over UW-Superior

BOXSCORE SUPERIOR, Wis. -- For the fifth consecutive season, the Augsburg College men's basketball team began its year with a nonconference victory, as the Auggies posted a 86-74 win over the University of Wisconsin-Superior on Monday night in Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium.

Augsburg (1-0) was led by Parker Hines (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Minnehaha Academy), who scored a career-high 23 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor and 10-of-12 from the free-throw line. Also scoring in double figures for the Auggies was Tyler Schmidt (SR, Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS) and Dan Kornbaum (JR, Little Falls, Minn./Little Falls HS), who finished with 16 and 15 points respectively. Brett Rasmussen (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) and Noah Veach (JR, Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS) scored 11 and 10 points respectively.

UW-Superior (1-1) was led by Johnquez Brooks, who recorded 18 points, five rebounds and four assists.

For the game, Augsburg converted on 47.4 percent (27-of-57) of its shots from the field, while the Yellowjackets hit 43.3 percent (29-of-67) of their shots. The teams were identically matched in rebounds (38) and turnovers (8) but the difference in the game came down to the free-throw line, where the Auggies hit 26-of-35 while UW-Superior was only able to hit 7-of-10.

Augsburg took an early 4-0 lead and extended it to as many as 13 in the first half before taking a 44-39 lead into the locker room at the intermission. The Yellowjackets cut the Auggie lead to 44-41 when they converted on their first possession of the second half, but Augsburg countered with a 12-1 run to stretch its lead to 58-44. The Auggies built their lead back to double digits, extending the lead to as many as 15 before earning the 86-74 victory.

The Auggies return to action over the Thanksgiving break as they travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., to take part in the Colorado College Tournament. The Auggies will face Colorado College on Friday, Nov. 23 and Benedictine University (Ill.) on Saturday, Nov. 24.
