Augsburg starts season with win over St. Scholastica

BOXSCORE DULUTH, Minn. -- For the second consecutive year under head coach Bill McKee, the Augsburg College women's basketball team posted a 20-plus point margin of victory in its season opener as the Auggies earned a 77-50 win over the College of St. Scholastica in nonconference action at Reif Gymnasium.

Augsburg (1-0) had 19 different players appear in the game and 12 factor into the scoring. The Auggies were led offensively by  Anne Skriba (JR, La Crosse, Wis./Fond Du Lac HS) who scored a career-high 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor, while adding three steals, two rebounds and a pair of assists.

Jolene Blood (JR, Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) and Jill Tichy (JR, Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka HS) also had an impressive Auggie debuts. Blood connected on 3-for-4 from behind the arc and 2-of-2 from the free throw line, while pulling down a team-high five rebounds while Tichy hit 3-of-6 from the floor and 5-of-7 from the charity stripe, while tying for a team-high with four steals. Also scoring in double figures for Augsburg was Abbey Luger (SO, Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul HS), who finished with 10 points, four steals and three assists.

St. Scholastica (0-2) was led by Danica Schellbach and Lindsey Olson. Schellbach was the only Saint to break into double figures, finishing with 10 points and a pair of rebounds, while Olson pulled down a game-high six rebounds and added four points.

Augsburg used a 9-0 run to start the game and never looked back. The Auggies extended their lead to as many as 25 points in the first-half and dominated St. Scholastica in points in the paint (16-4) and points off turnovers (16-2).

The Auggies maintained a 20-plus point advantage for the entire second-half and even extended their lead to 30 on five separate occassions.

For the game, Augsburg shot 42.6 percent (26-of-61) from the field, while holding the Saints to just 25.4 percent (15-of-59). Both teams posted impressive nights at the free throw line with Augsburg connecting on 18-of-24, while St. Scholastica hit 17-of-21. Not only did Augsburg outshoot the Saints, but the Auggie defense stepped up forcing 26 turnovers and collecting six blocked shots and claimed a 18-7 advantage in steals on the night.

Augsburg is off for the Thanksgiving holidays and returns to action on Monday (11/26) when it hosts Northwestern-Roseville in its home-opener.
