Auggies drop heartbreaker to Cobbers

BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- An Anne Skriba (SR, La Crosse, Wis./Fond Du Lac HS) layup attempt with one second remaining bounced in and out as the Augsburg College women's basketball nearly completed an impressive comeback, but fell 61-60 to Concordia College-Moorhead in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Si Melby Hall.

Augsburg (2-2 overall, 0-2 MIAC) was led offensively by Jill Tichy (JR, Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka HS), who scored a season-high 18 points, and Skriba, who finished with 17 points. Tichy finished 7-of-11 from the field and 4-of-6 from beyond the arc, while adding three blocked shots and a pair of rebounds and assists. Skriba recorded a 8-of-15 shooting afternoon and added three rebounds and a pair of assists. Jenna Orth (FY, Melrose, Minn./Melrose HS) came off the bench to score a career-high seven points for the Auggies, while Jolene Blood (JR, Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) tied her season-high with five assists.

Concordia (3-2 overall, 2-0 MIAC) was led Alexandra Lippert, who scored 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting and a perfect 4-for-4 performance at the free-throw line.

In a contest that was a battle from start to finish, there were six tied scores and four lead changes. The Auggies led by as many as 10 in the first half and both teams went to the locker room at the intermission deadlocked at 26-26.

Concordia built its lead to as many as nine with just over 5:30 to play, but the Auggies went on a 10-2 run to cut the Cobber lead to 59-58 with 1:58 left in the action. Concordia converted a layup on its next possession to extend the lead to 61-58.  Augsburg's Brittany Zins (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) claimed a big defensive rebound and was fouled in the process, sending her to the free-throw line to shoot the one-and-one with 39 seconds remaining. Zins converted on both shots to pull the Auggies within 61-60. The Augsburg defense was able to come up with a big stop on the ensuing Cobber possession, allowing Auggie Coach Bill McKee to take a timeout to set up the the final play. Skriba dribbled through a tough Concordia full-court press and got a good look at a layup with one second to play, but the shot hit off the front and back of the rim before bouncing out allowing the Cobbers to hang on for the win.

For the game, Augsburg outshot the Cobbers 46.8 percent (22-of-47) to 39.6 percent (21-of-53) from the floor and 46.2 percent (6-of-13) to 28.6 percent (4-of-14) from beyond the arc. Concordia claimed a 33-27 advantage on the boards. The Auggies posted a season-high eight team blocks but unfortunately also posted a season-high 19 turnovers.

Augsburg and Concordia both return to action on Monday (12/3) with Augsburg hosting Bethel at 7:30 p.m. at Si Melby Hall, and Concordia traveling to St. Paul to take on the University of St. Thomas.
