Auggies move to 8-0 for first time since 1979-80

BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- With six players scoring in double figures, led by a season-high 18 points from Tyler Schmidt (SR, Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS), the Augsburg College men's basketball team defeated Pacific Lutheran University (Wash.) 73-65 in a nonconference contest on Friday night at Si Melby Hall.

Augsburg used a balanced attack to remain unbeaten on the year, improving to 8-0 for the first time since the 1979-80 season, when the Auggies rattled off 20 in a row to start the year, en route to a 25-4 MIAC championship campain.

Schmidt finished 5-for-10 from beyond the three-point arc while chipping in a rebound and a steal for the Auggies. Dan Kornbaum (JR, Little Falls, Minn./Little Falls HS) led Augsburg on the boards, finishing with nine rebounds, 11 points and a blocked shot. Andy Seidlitz (JR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) led all players with six assists, while adding 10 points and eight boards.

Also finishing in double figures for the Auggies was Noah Veach (JR, Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS), Parker Hines (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Minnehaha Academy HS) and Brett Rasmussen (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS). Veach finished with 11 points and six boards, while adding three assists and a steal, while Hines and Rasmussen added 10 points apeice.

Pacific Lutheran (2-8) was led by Bryce Miller (FY, Fife, Wash./Fife HS), who posted the only double-double of the evening, finishing with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

After leading by five at the intermission, Augsburg was able to extend its lead to as many as 13 points in the second half before an agressive Lute defense started to pressure the Auggies. Pacific Lutheran was able to cut the Augsburg lead to 67-61 with just under 50 seconds to play, but the Auggies were able to convert on 6-for-6 from the free-throw line to seal the victory and remain unbeaten on the year.

For the game, Augsburg shot 44.2 percent (23-of-52) from the field, while the Lutes converted on 41.0 percent (25-of-61) of their shot attempts. Augsburg claimed a narrow 34-33 advantage on the boards and held advantages at the free-throw line (19-of-26 compared to 10-of-13) and beyond the arc (8-of-19 compared to 5-of-20).

Augsburg is idle for the remainder of 2012, and will return to action on on Friday, Jan. 4 at 3 p.m. at Si Melby Hall, when the Auggies host North Central University in nonconference action. Pacific Lutheran will return to action tomorrow (12/22), when it travels to River Falls, Wis. to take on Wisconsin-River Falls.
