Auggie rally falls just short

BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- Jill Tichy (JR, Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka HS) connected on back-to-back 3-pointers in the final 45 seconds to rally the Augsburg College women's basketball team but the Auggies ran out of time and couldn't quite finish the come back as Macalester College hung on for a 53-51 victory.

Augsburg (3-4 overall, 1-4 MIAC) was led by Tichy's 12-point afternoon, while she added six rebounds and three blocked shots. Abbey Luger (SO, Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul HS) posted her second consecutive double-digit performance, finishing with 11 points, four rebounds and steals and three assists.

Macalester (4-4 overall, 3-2 MIAC) was led by Kyanna Jones (SR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo), who finished with the only double-double of the afternnon, a 12-point and 11-rebound effort, while adding three assists and a pair of steals.

Despite a tough shooting afternoon for the Auggies, the team found them itself on the verge of a huge comeback. Trailing 51-41 with 1:02 to play, Luger was able to storm down the court and convert on a layup to cut the Mac lead to eight.  Augsburg fouled on the next possession and Mac hit 1-of-2 to push their lead to 52-43. Augsburg's Tichy then hit back-to-back 3-pointers to cut the Macalester lead to 52-49. The Auggie defense came up with a big turnover and Jenna Orth (FY, Melrose, Minn./Melrose HS) converted on a layup to bring the Auggies within 52-51 with just six seconds to play. Augsburg was able to foul and Mac hit 1-of-2 with 3.3 seconds to play, giving the Auggies a chance for the win. The Auggies couldn't get off a good shot and fell 53-51 to the Scots.

For the game, Augsburg shot 26.9 percent (18-of-67) from the field, while the Scots converted on 22.4 percent (11-of-49) of their shot attempts. Augsburg collected a season-high 15 steals, while forcing 20 turnovers. The Auggies claimed a 16-8 advantage in bench scoring and a 18-10 advantage in points inthe paint. Macalester claimed a big advantage on the boards, outrebounding the Auggies by a 56-43 margin and were able to convert on 29-of-40 from the free throw line, while Augsburg was only able to make 9-of-15.

Augsburg returns to action on Wednesday (12/12) at 7:30 p.m., with the Auggies hosting the College of Saint Benedict in a key MIAC matchup.
