Eren Cur (JR, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) scored a career-high 19 points to lead the Augsburg College men's basketball team to a 99-91 victoroy over Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Hamline University. With the win, the Auggies move to 13-7 overall (10-5 MIAC), while the Pipers fall to 10-10 overall (8-7 MIAC).
Cur, shot 4-for-7 from beyond the arc on his way to a career-high 19 point night, while adding four rebounds and three assists.
Andy Seidlitz (SO, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) also had a great night tying his career-high with 18 points. In total, Augsburg had six players finish in double-figures, including double-doubles from the big man duo of
Andy Grzesiak-Grimm (SR, Wyoming, Minn./St. Francis HS) and
Cory Polta (SR, Spring Lake Park, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS). Grzesiak-Grimm finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Polta posted 13 points, pulled down 10 rebounds and added three blocked shots.
Hamline was led by Levi Wenrich, who finished with 13 points and five assists.
Both teams shot over 50.0 percent in the first-half but a key 16-3 run to end the half gave the Auggies a 46-37 lead at the intermission. The second-half featured a series of runs by both teams. Augsburg stretched its lead to as many as 19 points, leading 88-69 with 3:49 to play but Hamline hit four three-pointers to bring the score within eight at 94-86. The Auggies shot 5-of-6 from the free-throw line in the final 33 seconds to seal the important MIAC victory over Hamline and revenge a Jan. 24 loss to the Pipers.
The Auggies had their second-best shooting night of the season, connecting on 59.6 percent (31-of-52) from the field, including a blistering 72.2 percent (13-of-18) in the second-half, while holding Hamline to 46.5 percent (33-of-71) from the floor. The Auggies had an incredible 45 free-throw attempts on the night, the most of any MIAC team this season and the most for an Augsburg men's basketball team since Nov. 24, 2001 when the Auggies had 47 attempts in a game against St. Scholastica.
Augsburg and Hamline both return to action this Saturday (2/4) with key MIAC match-ups. The Auggies will host the University of St. Thomas in a men's and women's double-header, while Pipers travel to Collegeville to take on St. John's University.
