Zins posts double-double to lead Auggies past Hamline

BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- Brittany Zins (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) recorded her fourth double-double of the season to lead the Augsburg College women's basketball team to a 57-42 victory over Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Hamline University on Wednesday night at Si Melby Hall.

With the win, Augsburg moves to 12-8 overall (9-8 MIAC), while Hamline falls to 6-14 overall (5-12 MIAC). The Auggies are now just two wins shy of the all-time school record for wins (varsity era), a 14-11 overall record posted in 1983-84.

Zins posted her fourth double-double of the season and fifth in her Auggie career with a 16-point, 14-rebound effort. Abbey Luger (FY, Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul HS) and Serenae Levine (SR, Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) also scored in double figures for the Auggies. Luger finished with 11 points and four rebounds, shooting 3-of-5 from beyond the three-point arc, while Levine posted 10 points, five rebounds and five assists. Lexi Thompson (SR, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) tied a career-high with five assists and added six points for the Auggies.

Hamline was led by Jordan Sammons, who also posted a double-double, scoring 14 points and pulling down 13 rebounds.

The Auggies started the game on a 10-2 run, sparked by three layups by Thompson. Hamline chipped away at the Augsburg lead, bringing the score within one at 16-15 with 12:21 on the clock in the first half. The teams traded baskets and small runs for the remainder of the half, but a big three-pointer by Luger with two seconds remaining gave the Auggies a 30-28 lead at the intermission.

In the second half, the Augsburg defense held the Pipers scoreless for nearly seven minutes, allowing the Auggies to stretch their lead to 48-35. Hamline cut the Augsburg lead to eight but couldn't get any closer, as the Auggies showed composure down the stretch and went on to claim the 57-42 win.

For the game, Augsburg shot 39.3 percent (22-of-56) from the field, while holding the Pipers to just 30.2 percent (11-of-24). The Auggies claimed a 40-35 advantage on the boards and were able to outscore Hamline in points in the paint (30-16), points off turnovers (29-13) and bench scoring (20-4).

Augsburg and Hamline both return to action on Saturday (2/4). The Auggies will host a men's and women's doubleheader against the University of St. Thomas, while Hamline will host the College of Saint Benedict in key MIAC action.
