Augsburg clinches home playoff game

BOXSCORE NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- Andy Grzesiak-Grimm (SR, Wyoming, Minn./St. Francis HS) scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Augsburg College men's basketball team to a 63-49 win over Carleton College on Wednesday night in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at West Gymnasium.

With the win, Augsburg moves to 16-9 overall (13-7 MIAC), while the Knights fall to 9-15 overall (6-13 MIAC). The victory secures a fourth-place seed in the MIAC post-season playoffs for the Auggies and guarantees that Augsburg will host a home playoff game next Wednesday (2/22) at 7:30 p.m. against a team to be decided.

Grzesiak-Grimm led all scorers with 18 points, while adding nine rebounds and a career-high five steals. Also finishing in double figures for Augsburg was Andy Seidlitz (SO, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) and Noah Veach (SO, Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS) who finished with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Cory Polta (SR, Spring Lake Park, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS) and Brett Sorenson (SR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) led the Auggies on the boards. Polta pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds and added eight points, while Sorenson tied a season-high with nine rebounds, while adding eight points and four assists.

Carleton was led by the duo of Tom Sawatzke and Scott Theisen, who finished with 14 points apiece.

After trailing by four at the half, the Auggies took advantage of the intermission and shifted the momentum in their favor as they began the second half on 21-7 run. Carleton was able to chip the Augsburg lead down to four, 49-45, but the Auggies outscored the Knights 14-4 over the final six-and-a-half minutes of play to earn the key MIAC victory.

On the night, Augsburg converted 42.9 percent (27-of-63) of its shots, while holding the Knights to 35.1 percent (20-of-57) from the field. The Auggies dominated on the boards, claiming a 46-32 advantage, outscored the Knights 30-20 in the paint and 19-8 in second-chance points.

Augsburg enjoys a bye this Saturday, while the Carleton makes the short trip to cross-town rival St. Olaf College to finish up the regular season. Augsburg will return to play on Wednesday (2/22) when it hosts am MIAC quarterfinal game.
