BOXSCORE
MINNEAPOLIS --
Casey Miller (FY, Bemidji, Minn.) and
Rachel Hennessy (FY, WIlliston, N.D.) scored goals for Augsburg College, and
Brianna Schulz (FY, Prior Lake, Minn.) collected 35 saves in goal, as the Auggies claimed a 2-1 victory over the University of St. Thomas in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game on Saturday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.
Miller scored 18 seconds after the opening faceoff on the first shot of the game for Augsburg (6-9-7 overall, 3-9-3 MIAC), assisted by
Devon Ellena (SO, Wales, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS).
Hennessy scored her team-leading 19th goal of the season at the 14:09 mark of the third period, a power-play marker from
Jessica Larkin (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS). It was the only shot on-goal of the third period for the Auggies.
Hennessy currently stands fourth
among NCAA Division III women's hockey players nationally in goals scored, as well as goals per-game (0.86). She stands second to Dani Schultz of Wisconsin-Superior (21 goals) in goals scored among Division III rookies this season.
Augsburg was outshot by a 36-18 margin in the game, including a 13-1 Tommie shot advantage in the third period. But Auggie goalie Schulz,
last week's MIAC Athlete of the Week, again came through in the clutch, stopping 35 of the 36 shots she faced. Over her last four starts, Schulz has stopped 166 of 172 shots (.965 save percentage). On the season, her .935 save percentage (559 saves, 39 goals allowed) is third-best
among MIAC goalies in overall statistics and 10th-best among NCAA Division III goalies nationally.
St. Thomas (12-8-2 overall, 8-6-1 MIAC) pulled its goalie for an extra attacker with 2:30 left in the third period, and took advantage of an Augsburg penalty with 1:02 remaining. Ten seconds into the power play, Kaylee Keys (SR, St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) scored for the Tommies, assisted by Taylor Schluter (SR, Minnetonka, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's HS) and Meghan Parker (SR, West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS). Three Tommie shots in the final 52 seconds were blocked by Augsburg defenders.
Alise Riedel (SO, Hudson, Wis.) had 16 saves in goal for St. Thomas.
Hennessy had seven shots on-goal for Augsburg, while Ellena had three shots. Parker and Keys had six shots on-goal for St. Thomas.
