Brittany Zins (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) recorded her second consecutive double-double, but it wasn't enough as the Augsburg College women's basketball team fell 63-41 to league-leading St. Thomas in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Si Melby Hall.
Zins led Augsburg (12-9 overall, 9-9 MIAC) with her 16-point, 11-rebound effort while adding one assist and a pair of steals.
Serenae Levine (SR, Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) finished with eight points, five rebounds and four assists for the Auggies, while
Lexi Thompson (SR, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) recorded a game-high four steals, while adding six points three boards and a pair of assists.
St. Thomas (20-1 overall, 18-0 MIAC) finished with three players in double figures led by Anna Smith, who finished with 10 points, six rebounds and a blocked shot.
The Auggies led 8-7 seven minutes into the first-half but St. Thomas put together an 8-0 run to retake the lead 15-8. Augsburg cut the Tommie lead to 19-16 with 2:51 to play in the half but St. Thomas closed out the half on a 9-0 run, taking a 28-16 lead into the locker room at the intermission.
Augsburg scored the first six points of the second-half to cut the lead to 28-22 but couldn't get any closer as the tough Tommie defense kept the Augsburg offense out of rhythm.
For the game, Augsburg shot 32.7 percent (7-of-19) from the field, while St. Thomas connected on 48.8 percent (21-of-43) of its shots. The Tommies claimed a narrow 31-30 advantage on the boards, while the Auggies claimed a 26-22 advantage in points in the paint. The two big differences in the game were at the free throw line and team depth. St. Thomas was able to hit on 18-of-23 from the free throw line, while the Auggies were only able to hit on 8-of-17, the Tommies also claimed a 32-7 advantage in bench scoring.
Augsburg as St. Thomas both return to MIAC action on Wednesday (2/8) with Augsburg hosting Macalester and St. Thomas hosting St. Catherine.
