Augsburg tops Macalester 61-51

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Augsburg College men's basketball team posted a 61-51 victory over Macalester College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Monday night at the Leonard Center. With the win, the Auggies move to 12-2 overall (7-2 MIAC), while the Scots fall to 4-10 overall (1-8 MIAC).

Augsburg was led offensively by the duo of Tyler Schmidt (SR, Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS) and Dan Kornbaum (JR, Little Falls, Minn./Little Falls HS), who finished with identical 15-point, four-rebound performances. Also finishing in double-figures for Augsburg was Brett Rasmussen (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS), who finished with 12 points and eight rebounds. Noah Veach (JR, Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS) led the Auggies on the boards with nine rebounds and added five points.

Macalester finished with three players in double figures, led by Dylan Kilgour, who finished with 16 points and four rebounds.

After the Auggies grabbed the opening basket, Macalester went on to lead until the 9:18 mark, when a Kornbaum jumper tied things up at 11-11. Augsburg outscored Macalester 17-7 over the next eight minutes and took a 28-20 lead into the locker room at the break.

The Augsburg lead floated around 10 points for a majority of the second-half. The Auggies grabbed their largest lead of the night, a 54-38 advantage, off a Rasmussen jumper at the 4:38 mark. The Auggies were able to maintain a double-digit lead and went on to claim the 61-51 victory.

For the game, Augsburg shot 36.5 percent (19-of-52) from the floor, while Macalester connected on 35.4 percent (17-of-48) of its shots. The Auggies claimed a narrow 35-34 advantage on the boards and were able to take advantage their opponents miscues, outscoring Macalester 20-5 in points off turnovers.

Both teams return to action on Wednesday (1/16) with Augsburg hosting Gustavus Adolphus College in a key MIAC matchup, while Macalester makes the short trip to take on league-leading St. Thomas.
