Auggies triumph 64-61 in back-and-forth battle

BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- Dan Kornbaum (JR, Little Falls, Minn.) scored 24 points with four rebounds, scoring 14 points in the second half to lead Augsburg College to a 64-61 victory over visiting St. Mary's University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball game on Saturday afternoon at Si Melby Hall.

Brett Rasmussen (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) scored 13 points and pulled down seven rebounds for Augsburg (13-3 overall, 8-3 MIAC), while Noah Veach (JR, Grand Haven, Mich.) scored nine points with five assists and a steal. Tyler Schmidt (SR, Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS) scored seven points with seven assists, and Parker Hines (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Minnehaha Academy HS) scored seven points with three assists and two steals.

St. Mary's (3-13 overall, 2-9 MIAC) was paced by Will Swiggum (FY, St. Charles, Minn.) who scored 24 points with nine rebounds. Brian Thomas (SR, Bellwood, Ill./St. Joseph HS) scored 12 points, Evan Pederson (SO, Onalaska, Wis./La Crosse Aquinas HS) had 11 points with four rebounds, and Michael Burfeind (SR, Lewiston, Minn./Lewiston-Altura HS) had eight points and five rebounds.

The game was a close one throughout, with 10 ties and 14 lead changes, and neither team leading by more than seven points. St. Mary's led 55-50 with 5:22 left to play, but Augsburg was able to rally back with a 14-6 run to take the victory. Kornbaum had six points in the closing run, while Schmidt had the final four points of the game -- a jumper with 39 seconds left to give the Auggies a 62-61 lead and two free throws with 23 seconds remaining. The Auggie defense was able to stop the Cardinals and hang on for the 64-61 win.

For the game, Augsburg shot 48.2 percent (27-of-56) from the floor, while St. Mary's connected on 51.1 percent (24-of-47) of its shots. St. Mary's claimed a 31-24 advantage on the boards.

Augsburg returns to action on Monday (1/21) with the Auggies hosting Bethel University in MIAC play.
