BOXSCORE ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Augsburg College women's basketball team used a strong second half to post an impressive 74-48 victory over St. Catherine University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Wednesday evening at the Butler Center. With the win, the Auggies move to 4-6 overall (2-5 MIAC), while the Wildcats fall to 1-8 overall (0-6 MIAC).
Augsburg was led offensively by the duo of
Abbey Luger (SO, Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul HS) and
Brittany Zins (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS), who finished with 11 points apeice. In addition to her double-digit scoring performance, Luger recorded a career-high six steals and added three assists and a pair of rebounds. Zins finished 4-of-7 from the floor and added an assist.
St. Kate's was led by Sarah Mong (SO, Page, Ariz./Page HS), who finished with a game-high 18 points, shooting an impressive 7-for-9 from the field and 4-for-5 from the free-throw line.
After leading 25-21 in a competitive and evenly matched first half, Augsburg came out of the locker room in the second half ready to play. The Auggies put together some impressive runs and had one of their better shooting halves in the past few years. After shooting 0-for-5 from beyond the three-point arc in the first half, Augsburg connected on 6-of-11 from downtown in the second frame. The Auggies connected on 91.7 percent (11-of-12) from the free-throw line and 57.1 percent (16-of-28) from the floor in the second half to pull away from St. Kate's and seal the important conference win for the Auggies.
For the game, Augsburg shot a season-high 47.2 percent (25-of-53) from the field, while the Wildcats connected on 37.2 percent (16-of-43) of their shot attempts. St. Kate's claimed a narrow 30-29 advantage on the boards but the Auggies forced an season-high 29 Wildcat turnovers, while only committing 17.
Augsburg returns to action on Saturday (1/5) when the Auggie travel to St. Paul to take on the University of St. Thomas in the second of five consecutive games on the road. St. Catherine also returns to action on Saturday as the Wildcats make the trip up to St. Joseph, Minn. to take on the College of St. Benedict.
