Katie Ahlstrom (SR, St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) hit a huge three-pointer with 13.3 seconds to play, giving the Augsburg College women's basketball team a 63-61 lead, and the Auggie defense held on for the victory over Bethel University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Monday night at the Robertson Center.
Augsburg (6-10 overall, 4-9 MIAC) finished with five players in double figures, led by
Jolene Blood (JR, Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS), who finished with 15 points and a career-high eight assists.
Anne Skriba (SR, La Crosse, Wis./Fond du Lac HS) finished with 13 points and seven rebounds, while
Jessica Lillquist (FY, Sebeka, Minn./Sebeka HS) finished with 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor.
Katie Ahlstrom (SR, St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) and
Jill Tichy (JR, Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka HS) finished with 10 points apiece, with Tichy posting a career-high seven rebounds.
Bethel (3-13 overall, 2-11 MIAC) was led by Rachel Parupsky, who claimed the only double-double of the night, finishing with a game-high 22 points and 13 rebounds.
The Auggies played well over the opening minutes of action, taking a 12-5 lead off a jumper by Skriba at the 14:27 mark. The Royals chipped away at the Auggie lead and the two teams traded baskets until Augsburg put together a 9-0 run to go up 23-17 with 5:07 to play in the first half. Bethel ended the first half on a 17-3 run and went into the locker room at the break leading 34-26.
Augsburg outscored Bethel 15-4 over the opening seven minutes of the second half to regain the lead at 41-38. Neither team was able to pull away over the next 10 minutes and both teams were tied 56-56 with 2:37 to play. Ahlstrom hit a jumper with 42 seconds to play to give the Auggies a 60-59 advantage, but Bethel converted on a jumper on its next possession to retake the lead, 61-60 with only 27 seconds to play. Ahlstrom again was the hero for Augsburg, nailing a three-pointer with 14 seconds left on the clock. Bethel was able to get a shot off, but it missed off the front of the iron, giving the Auggies the important MIAC win.
For the game, Augsburg shot a 39.4 percent (26-of-66) from the field, while the Royals connected on 36.4 percent (20-of-55) of their shot attempts. Bethel claimed a 43-37 advantage on the boards but Augsburg was able to force 18 Royal turnovers and outscore Bethel 20-13 in points off turnovers.
Augsburg and Bethel both return to action on Wednesday (1/23) at 7:30 p.m., with the Auggies hosting Hamline University, while the Royals travel to St. Peter, Minn. to take on Gustavus Adolphus College.
