Brett Rasmussen (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) and
Noah Veach (JR, Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS) each posted double-doubles to lead the Augsburg College men's basketball team to a 82-74 victory over North Central University (Minn.) in a nonconference contest on Friday afternoon at Si Melby Hall.
With the win, the Auggies remain unbeaten on the year moving to 9-0 overall, making Saturday's Augsburg-at-St. Thomas game all the more interesting for Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference fans, as it will be a matchup of the only two remaining unbeatens in the conference.
Veach and Rasmussen finished with identical 13-point, 11-rebound efforts to lead Augsburg. For Rasmussen, it was his second double-double of the year, while it was the first of the season for Veach. Augsburg had four other players finish in double figures in a balanced scoring afternoon.
Dan Kornbaum (JR, Little Falls, Minn./Little Falls HS) and
Tyler Schmidt (SR, Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS) finished with 13 points apiece, while
Andy Seidlitz (JR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) finished with 11 and
Parker Hines (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Minnehaha Academy HS) added 10 points, a season-high seven rebounds and tied a season-high six assists.
North Central (5-5 overall) was led by the duo of Nathan Roeder and Bryce Burkman. Roeder led all players with 31 points and seven assists, while Burkman posted a double-double finishing with 14 points and 10 boards.
Augsburg played well in the opening minutes of action and used a key 11-0 run to give Augsburg its largest lead of the afternoon, a 25-12 advantage off a 3-pointer from Seidlitz at the 12:20 mark. North Central chipped away at the Augsburg lead, tying the game 35-35 with 3:23 to play in the first half. Augsburg outscored the Rams 6-0 over the remainder of the half and took at 41-35 lead into the locker room at the intermission.
The second half played out much like the first, with the Auggies putting together runs and North Central answering right back. Augsburg led 67-65 with with just over four minutes to play, but the Auggies were able to hit 11 free throws, including 9-for-10 from Kornbaum to seal the victory for the Auggies and remain unbeaten on the season.
For the game, Augsburg shot 39.4 percent (28-of-71) from the field, while the Rams shot 48.4 percent (31-of-64) from the floor. Augsburg claimed a 44-39 advantage on the boards and outscored North Central 20-10 in bench scoring.
Augsburg returns to action tomorrow (1/5) at 3 p.m. when the Auggies travel across town to take on MIAC-rival St. Thomas. North Central returns to action on Tuesday (1/8) when it travels to Arden Hills to take on Northwestern College-Roseville in their Upper Midwest Athletic Conference opener.
