Jill Tichy (JR, Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka HS) scored a game- and career-high 21 points to lead the Augsburg College women's basketball team to a 70-58 victory over Carleton College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night at West Gymnasium.
Augsburg was led offensively by Tichy's 21-point effort on 9-of-12 shooting from the floor. Also scoring in double figures for the Auggies was
Anne Skriba (SR, La Crosse, Wis./Fond Du Lac HS) and
Jessica Lillquist (FY, Sebeka, Minn./Sebeka HS). Skriba finished with 14 points and six boards on 7-of-12 shooting from the floor, while Lillquist finished with 10 points, four rebounds and a pair of assists.
Carleton was led by Emma Purfeerst (JR., River Falls, Wis./River Falls HS), who posted the only double-double of the night, finishing with a 19 points and 11 rebounds, shooting 7-for-10 from the field and a perfect 5-for-5 from the free-throw line.
Augsburg started the game on a 13-3 run, was able to extend its lead to as many as 12 in the first half and took a 32-25 lead into the locker room at the intermission. Carleton chipped the Augsburg lead down to 42-38 at the 14:55 mark of the second half, but Augsburg put together a 13-0 run over the next four-and-a-half minutes to stretch the Auggie lead to 55-38. The Auggies continued their strong play down the stretch, never allowing the Knights to get closer than 12 as Augsburg cruised on for an important 70-58 MIAC victory.
For the game, Augsburg shot a season-high 56.6 percent (30-of-53) from the field, while the Knight connected on 37.9 percent (22-of-58) of their shot attempts. Augsburg claimed a 37-33 advantage on the boards and outscored Carleton 38-24 in the paint.
Augsburg and Carleton both return to action on Saturday (1/12) with the Auggies traveling to Northfield to take on St. Olaf College in the fourth of five consecutive games on the road, while the Knights play host Macalester College -- both games will be a men's and women's doubleheader with tip-off at 1 and 3 p.m. respectively.
