No. 5 Tommies top No. 15 Auggies in four

BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- In a matchup between two Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference teams ranked in the top 25 nationally, the University of St. Thomas volleyball team bested host Augsburg College in four sets (25-15, 23-25, 25-18, 25-21) before a crowd of 831 at Si Melby Hall.

The loss drops Augsburg's record to 23-3 overall and 6-1 MIAC, while the Tommies improved to 21-2 overall, 6-1 MIAC. Augsburg, ranked No. 15 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III national poll, saw its 19-match winning streak snapped with the loss to the No. 5-ranked Tommies, the defending NCAA Division III national champions.

Ashley Peper (SO, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) and Colleen Ourada (SR, Omaha, Neb./Mercy HS) led the Auggies on the offensive attack, recording 15 kills each. Peper finished with a kill-dig double-double, chipping in 11 digs, two service aces, a block and an assist. Ourada also contributed two aces, six digs, two solo blocks and an assist.

The Auggies came out a little flat in the first set and could not overcome poor passing while trailing 12-2. They trailed again early in the second set 10-4, but rallied back and tied the score at 17-17 before the Tommies scored the next five points to take the lead 22-17. Augsburg scored eight of the next nine points to close out the Tommies for the second-set win. The third and fourth sets were similiar to the first, with the Auggies trailing early and rallying back, but the Tommies proved to be too much and cruised to the four-set win.

Emily McCourt (SR, Sun Prairie, Wis.) finished with a match-best 46 assists, seven digs, and a kill, while Jaelyn Arndt (FY, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) contributed eight kills and two blocks (one solo). Taylor Trautman (FY, Hutchinson, Minn.) blocked four (three solo) Tommie attacks and also chipped in three kills and three digs.

For St. Thomas, Jill Greenfield (JR, Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins HS) recorded a kill-dig double-double with 14 kills, 10 digs and a match-best 5 blocks (two solo), while Kelly Foley (JR, St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) finished with a match-best 16 kills, six blocks (one solo) and four digs. St. Thomas blocked 14 Auggie attacks and seemed to come up with a timely block every time it was needed.

The Auggies return to MIAC action on Saturday (10/19) at 3 p.m., hosting Saint Mary's University at Si Melby Hall.
