No. 19 Auggies sweep Bethel

BOXSCORE ARDEN HILLS, Minn. -- The Augsburg College volleyball team had two players record kill-dig double-doubles for the second match in a row, and swept Bethel University (25-19, 25-22, 25-21) in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match on Wednesday evening at the Robertson Center.

The Royals (9-8 overall, 2-3 MIAC) led early in all three matches, but did not have enough to hold off the Auggies (16-2 overall, 5-0 MIAC), who entered the match as the No. 19-ranked team in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III national poll. The victory marks Augsburg's 12th in a row and fifth sweep in six matches. The sweep was the Auggies' 12th in its 16 wins this season, and they are now 51-10 in 61 sets this season.

Katelyn Berens (SR, Jordan, Minn./Prior Lake HS) came into the match needing only two digs to reach 1,000 for her career. Berens finished with nine digs and two service aces, meaning she only needs 46 digs to move into the top 10 in Augsburg history. After missing her junior year due to an injury, Berens is leading the Auggies in digs and is second in the MIAC's overall statistics in the category with 337.

Colleen Ourada (SR, Omaha, Neb/Mercy HS) up her eigth double-double of the year, and fifth in a seven-match span, with a match-best 12 kills, 10 digs and two blocks. Ashley Peper (SO, Bloominton, Minn/Jefferson HS) claimed her seventh double-double of the season with eleven kills, a match-best 16 digs, three assists, two service aces and one solo block.

Setter Emily McCourt (SR, Sun Prairie, Wis.) finished with a match-high 36 assists, seven digs, an ace and a kill, while Taylor Trautman (FY, Hutchinson, Minn.) was effective for the Auggies with a hitting percentage of .316 in her nine kills. Trautman added four digs, three blocks and a service ace to her evening. Jaelyn Arndt (FY, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) led the Auggies hitting .455 in her six kills, and finished with three blocks, while Mackensie Menke (JR, Prior Lake, Minn./Shakopee HS) added seven digs.

Bethel was led by Nicole Ackatz, who finished with 10 kills, hitting .292, while Carlee Hoppe had seven kills for the Royals. Bethel couldn't get any long rallies going because of some timely errors; they finished with 11 in the three-set match.

Augsburg returns to action on Friday and Saturday (10/4-5), traveling to Winona, Minn., to compete in the Saint Mary's University Cardinal Invitational. On Friday, Augsburg faces Augustana College (Ill.) at 3 p.m. and Central College (Iowa) at 7 p.m.
