Marie Fitzgerald (SO, Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson HS) led the Augsburg College women's basketball team to a 62-48 victory over the College of St. Scholastica in nonconference action on Saturday afternoon at Si Melby Hall. With the win, Augsburg moves to 3-3 overall, while the Saints fall to 3-5 overall.
The first half was a tighly contested battle, with neither team able to extend their lead to more than six points. Fitzgerald scored four points in the final minute to give Augsburg a 25-23 lead at the intermission.
Augsburg made some offensive adjustments at the break and turned things up in the second half -- putting on one of their better shooting performances of the year -- hitting 52.0 percent (13-of-25) from the field in the frame. Augsburg slowly built its lead to double digits, claiming a 41-31 advantage with just over 11 minutes to play, but St. Scholastica rallied back to tie the score at 43-43 with 7:11 left in the action. Augsburg went on to outscore the Saints 16-5 over the final seven minutes and claim the nonconference victory.
Augsburg finished with three players in double figures, led by Fitzgerald, who tied a career-high with 13 points, hitting 4-of-6 from beyond the arc, while adding three rebounds and three steals.Â
Abbey Luger (JR, Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul HS) and
Jill Tichy (SR, Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka HS) finished with 12 points apiece. Luger put up one of the best defensive efforts in recent memory, finishing with a career-high nine steals, while adding three blocked shots and three assists. Tichy lead all players with five assists and added six boards.
St. Scholastica was led by Mariah Hovick, who finished with a game-high 16 points on a 5-of-8 shooting performance from the field.
For the game, Augsburg shot a season-best 41.3 percent (19-of-46) from the field, while Saints were only able to connect on 34.1 percent (14-of-41) of their shots. The Auggies claimed a narrow 32-30 advantage on the boards and forced 32 St. Scholastica turnovers, which Augsburg turned into 27 points.
Augsburg is idle over finals week and returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 21 at 3 p.m. at Si Melby Hall, with a game against Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Gustavus Adolphus College.
