Auggies drop 66-51 decision to Gusties

BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- Jill Tichy (SR, Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka HS) scored 16 points and pulled down five rebounds, but her Augsburg College women's basketball team dropped a 66-51 decision to visiting Gustavus Adolphus College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Saturday afternoon at Si Melby Hall.

Abbey Luger (JR, Oakdale, Minn/North St. Paul HS) scored 13 points, adding seven steals, three assists and three rebounds for the Auggies (3-4 overall, 0-4 MIAC). In her last three games, Luger has recorded 19 steals, including a career-high nine in last Saturday's win over St. Scholastica. Luger currently stands second among MIAC players in steals per-game, with a 3.4 average.

Marie Fitzgerald (SO, Fort Atkinson, Wis.) adding seven points, six rebounds and four assists off the bench for the Auggies, while Jessica Lillquist (SO, Sebeka, Minn.) and Bridget Kopp (SO, St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) had five points each.

Gustavus (5-2 overall, 2-2 MIAC) was paced by Julia Dysthe (SR, White Bear Lake, Minn.), who scored 25 points with six assists, three steals and three rebounds, and Karina Schroeder (SO, Lake Crystal, Minn./Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial HS), who scored 23 points and pulled down 15 rebounds. Britta Rinke (SR, Waconia, Minn.) added 12 points and seven rebounds.

The Gusties took advantage of a cold-shooting first half by the Auggies to take a 25-14 lead into the locker room at halftime. Augsburg shot just 4-of-24 (16.7 percent) from the field in the first half, while Gustavus connected on 34.8 percent (8-of-23). Trailing 13-12 with 11:24 left in the first half, the Gusties scored 13 straight points -- eight by Schroeder -- to take a 25-13 lead with 1:42 left in the opening stanza.

Gustavus connected on 75 percent (15-of-20) of its field goals in the second half, while Augsburg connected on 14-of-35 (40.0 percent) from the field. Gustavus kept the lead in double digits throughout all but the first minute of the second half, extending the advantage to as many as 18 points.

Luger scored 11 of her points and had five of her steals in the second half for the Auggies, while Tichy had 10 second-half points.

Gustavus outrebounded Augsburg by a 42-31 margin, and converted 34 points in the paint, compared to 14 for Augsburg.

Both teams return to action after the holiday break on Jan. 4, with the Auggies hosting St. Catherine at 3 p.m. at Si Melby Hall, and the Gusties playing at St. Olaf at 1 p.m.
