Augsburg clinches 3rd place MIAC finish with win over MAC

BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg College men's basketball team clinched a third-place Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference finish with a 88-64 victory over Macalester College on Wednesday night at Si Melby Hall. With the win, the Auggies move to 18-6 overall (13-6 MIAC) and earn the right to host the No. 6 seed (to be determined) in a first-round MIAC Playoff Quarterfinal game on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at Si Melby Hall.

Augsburg was led by Andy Seidlitz (JR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS), who finished with 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor, marking his 10th double-digit scoring campaign of the season. Noah Veach (JR, Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS) finished with 16 points and a career-high six assists.

Also scoring in double-figures for the Auggies was Tyler Schmidt (SR, Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS) and Dan Kornbaum (JR, Little Falls, Minn./Little Falls HS), who finished with 12 and 11 points respectively. Tyler Bredow (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels HS) came off the bench to score six points on a perfect 2-of-2 performance from beyond the arc on senior night.

Macalester (4-20 overall, 1-18 MIAC) was led by Bert Yaffe, who finished with 14 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the floor.

The Auggies came out and led from start to finish, posting their fourth performance of the season connecting on 60 percent or better from the field. 16 different Auggies saw action in the contest and 10 factored into the scoring as Augsburg had a chance to showcase the depth of its bench.

For the game, Augsburg shot 60.0 percent (33-of-55) from the field, while Macalester connected on 45.3 percent (24-of-53) of its shots. The Scots posted a 29-23 advantage on the boards but Augsburg was able to post huge advantages in points-in-the-paint (40-24), points-off-turnovers (26-4) and bench scoring (38-20).

Augsburg returns to action on Saturday (2/13) when it travels down to Winona, Minn. to take on St. Mary's University in a men's and women's double header, marking the final MIAC regular season game for both the Auggie teams.
