Schmidt leads Auggies past Cobbers, MIAC Championship game on Sunday!

BOXSCORE MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Tyler Schmidt (SR, Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS) scored a game-high 20 points in leading the Augsburg College men's basketball team to a 74-67 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoff semifinal victory at Concordia's Memorial Hall. With the win, the Auggies advance to MIAC Championship game for the first time under coach Aaron Griess.

Augsburg is the first MIAC team to hand Concordia a loss on its home court this season and goes into the MIAC Championship game on a five-game win streak. The Auggies will travel across town to face MIAC-rival St. Thomas in the Championship game at 2 p.m.

Schmidt scored his 20 points, including 15 in the first half, on 7-of-14 shooting from the floor, while hitting four 3-pointers and pulling down a pair of rebounds to lead Augsburg (21-6 overall). Dan Kornbaum (JR, Little Falls, Minn./Little Falls HS) continued his strong season putting up 18 points, shooting 8-of-12 from the floor, while adding nine rebounds. Parker Hines (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Minnehaha Academy HS) also scored in double figures for the Auggies, recording 13 points and tying a season-high seven rebounds, while adding five assists.

The Auggies led for nearly the entire first half, but were never able to extend their lead to more than six points. Schmidt was brilliant for Augsburg in the frame and led the Auggies to a 34-30 lead at the intermission.

Augsburg shot even better in the second half, and was able to take its largest lead of the evening, a 60-46 advantage, at the 6:57 mark. Concordia answered with a 5-0 run to cut the lead back to single digits but Augsburg was able to push the lead back to 14 at the 4:45 mark. Concordia wasn't about to let the Auggies run away with the game and put together an 8-0 run, cutting the Augsburg advantage 69-67 just 1:23 left to play.

Augsburg got a good look at a 3-pointer with just under a minute to play but it wouldn't fall and Brett Rasmussen (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) came up with a huge offensive rebound that forced Concordia to foul Andy Seidlitz (JR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) with 33 seconds remaining. Seidlitz was able to hit 1-of-2, pushing the Augsburg lead to 70-67. Concordia got off a 3-pointer on its next possession but wasn't able to connect and Hines pulled down the rebound and was fouled. Hines sunk both of his free throws to push the Augsburg lead to 72-67 and Eren Cur (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) put the final exclamation point on the win with a dunk with 10 seconds remaining to seal the victory for the Auggies.

For the game, Augsburg shot 49.1 percent (28-of-57) from the field, while the Cobbers connected on 38.2 percent (26-of-68) of their shots and claimed a 40-33 advantage on the boards.
