Jolene Blood (JR, Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) recorded 20 points and five rebounds to lead the Augsburg College women's basketball team to a 58-55 victory over Carleton College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night at Si Melby Hall. With the win, the Auggies move to 8-14 overall (6-13 MIAC), while the Knights fall to 5-17 overall (5-14 MIAC).
Augsburg was led was led by Blood, who posted her second 20-plus scoring performance of the season, connecting on 7-of-15 from the field, while adding five steals and and assist. Also finishing in double-figures for Augsburg was
Anne Skriba (SR, La Crosse, Wis./Fond Du Lac HS), who finished with 13 points and four rebounds, shooting 5-of-6 from the field.
Carleton finished with four players in double figures, led by Skylar Tsutsui, who finished with 21 points, four steals and a pair of assists.
The Auggies began the game on a 17-7 run and were able to extend their lead to 23-11 with 5:44 to play in the opening frame. Carleton chipped away at the Augsburg lead and a pair of Knight free throws with 12 seconds to play cut the Augsburg lead to 29-25 at the half. The Auggies led for nearly the entire second-half but were not able to put the game out of reach as the Knights battled back to tie things up 50-50 with 3:04 to play. Augsburg's Skriba connected on a pull-up jumper with 33 seconds to play to go up 56-53 but Carleton answered back with a layup to pull within one with 21 seconds left in the action. Augsburg's Blood converted on a pair of free throws with 19 seconds remaining to put the Auggies up 58-55 and Carleton would have a good look at a 3-pointer as time was expiring but couldn't get it to fall as Augsburg earned the victory over the Knights.
For the game, Augsburg shot 41.1 percent (23-of-56), while Carleton was able to connect on 40.0 percent (16-of-40) of its shots. The Auggies claimed a 34-24 advantage on the boards, including 18 offensive rebounds, which led to the Auggies outscoring Carleton 13-4 in second chance points.
Augsburg returns to action on Saturday (2/9) when it hosts St. Olaf College in a men's and women's double-header at Si Melby Hall. The game will be the final home game for the season for the Auggies women with women's action beginning at 1 p.m., while the men tip-off at 3 p.m.
