BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg College women's soccer team scored two goals in the first 11:08 of play, and the goals held up for the Auggies in a 2-1 win over Bethel University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Saturday evening at Edor Nelson Field.
Augsburg used goals from
Morgan Kenny (FY, Wauwatosa, Wis./Brookfield Central HS) and
Olivia Muyres (JR, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) to remain unbeaten at 6-0-3 overall, 2-0-0 in MIAC play.
Suzette Anderson (SR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) scored the lone goal of the game for Bethel (2-3-0 overall, 0-2-0 MIAC).
The first 30 minutes was the best soccer we've played so far this season. Bethel did well to get back in the match, however, and the next 60 minutes was a tightly contested match," said Augsburg head coach
Mike Navarre. "Although our quality dropped off, our resolve did not. I'm glad we were able to see it through and make our first-half lead stand up."
Kenny claimed a goal from Muyres at the 6:36 mark of the contest, driving a shot from the left corner of the six-yard box for her second goal of the season. Muyres followed less than five minutes later with her 12th goal of the year, finishing a play from
Marie Fitzgerald (SO, Fort Atkinson, Wis.) with a shot to the top right corner of the goal.
With her goal and assist on Saturday, Muyres maintained her stranglehold on the MIAC's scoring lead. Through nine games, Muyres leads the MIAC's overall statistics in both goals (12) and points (30), while she is now tied for the conference's lead in assists (6). Her point total is 13 ahead of the player in second place in the conference in the category. Fitzgerald now stands third in the MIAC in total points with 16 (six goals, four assists).
Augsburg outshot Bethel by an 18-2 margin in the first half, en route to a 24-6 advantage in shots in the game. Augsburg also had five corner kicks to Bethel's three.
The Royals scored at the 35:38 mark, as Anderson scored an unassisted goal, working free of a defender in the center of the box and firing a shot to the low right corner.
Katie Gajewski (SR, Wausau, Wis./Wausau East HS) had two saves in goal for the Auggies, while Micale Jensen (FY, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) had seven saves in goal for Bethel.
Augsburg returns to play on Wednesday (9/25) at 7:30 p.m., hosting Macalester in an Auggie Homecoming Week matchup at Edor Nelson Field.
"Now we turn our sights to Macalester. Macalester is an excellent team that will undoubtedly pose a big challenge for us. I'm sure it will be an electric atmosphere on Wednesday night," Navarre said.
