Dan Kornbaum (SR, Little Falls, Minn./Little Falls HS) scored a game-high 22 points, reaching the 1,000-point plateau for his collegiate career, leading the Augsburg College men's basketball team to a 69-42 victory over Macalester College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Si Melby Hall.
Augsburg (7-4 overall, 3-3 MIAC) has now posted back-to-back conference victories, while shooting more than 50 percent from the field for the sixth time this season. Macalester falls to 2-11 overall (1-7 MIAC) and was held to just one 3-point basket in the game.
The Auggies were led by Kornbaum's 22-point effort, which included a 9-of-12 afternoon from the floor, seven rebounds and three blocked shots. Kornbaum, currently top-ranked among MIAC players in overall statistics with an 19.2 points per-game average, scored 20-plus points for the fourth straight game and sixth time this season.
In the process, Kornbaum went over the 1,000-point plateau in his college career. He has scored 724 points in his two seasons as an Auggie, along with 281 points in his two prior seasons at Division II Minnesota-Duluth. He now has 1,005 career points.
Joey Sonnenfeld (SO, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) was a nice spark for Augsburg, coming off the bench to post eight points, eight rebounds, a block and a steal. Point guards
Richie Perea (FY, Coloado Springs, Colo./Wasson HS) and
Parker Hines (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Minnehaha Academy HS) teammed up to dish out a combined 11 assists to lead the Auggie offense.
Macalester was led by Griffin Glatt, who scored 10 points and added a pair of boards.
The Auggies struggled offensively in the first half and found themselves trailing 27-22 at the intermission. The Auggies made some adjustments at the half and outscored Macalester 22-2 over the first 11 minutes of the second half, taking a 44-29 lead. Augsburg stretched its lead to as many as 28 points before cruising on to the 69-42 victory.
For the game, Augsburg shot 50.0 percent (24-of-48) from the floor, while Macalester converted on 31.9 percent (15-of-47) of its shots. The Auggies grabbed a 35-31 advantage on the boards, while outscoring the Scots 32-18 in points in the paint and 28-12 in bench scoring.
Augsburg will return to action on Monday (1/13) at 7:30 p.m., when the Auggies host St. John's University at Si Melby Hall in MIAC action. The game is a rescheduled date, after its original game last Monday was postponed due to extreme cold weather.
