BOXSCORE NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- In a game that featured 14 lead changes and seven ties, the Augsburg College men's basketball team scored a 66-63 win over host Carleton College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Wednesday evening at West Gym.
Augsburg (9-4 overall, 5-3 MIAC) scored seven straight points in a 2:23 span, punctuated by a three-pointer by
Parker Hines (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Minnehaha Academy HS) with 23 seconds left, giving the Auggies a 64-59 advantage. After Carleton (6-7 overall, 4-4 MIAC) connected on two free throws with 15 seconds left, Hines again came through in the clutch, hitting two free throws with 10 seconds left to give the visitors a two-possession advantage, en route to the Auggies' fourth straight victory.
Hines scored 10 points, one of four Auggie starters to score in double figures, while pulling down five rebounds and contributing two assists and a steal in 35 minutes of action.
Andy Seidlitz (SR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) led the Auggies with 19 points, hitting three 3-pointers and pulling down five rebounds.
Dan Kornbaum (SR, Little Falls, Minn.), the MIAC's leading scorer in overall statistics with a 19.8 points per-game average, scored 18 points, while pulling down eight rebounds and blocking two shots. Making his first start of the season,
Joey Sonnenfeld (SO, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) scored 10 points with four rebounds.
Noah Veach (SR, Grand Haven, Mich.) scored six points with six rebounds and two assists.
Carleton was led by Peter Bakker-Arkema, who led all players with 24 points. Taylor Hanson scored 13 points with nine rebounds, four assists and three steals, and Beau Smit scored 11 points with three rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots.
Augsburg jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the first 3:34 of play, but Carleton rallied back to take a 14-12 lead two-and-a-half minutes later. The Knights eventually led by as many as six points in the first half, taking a 41-37 halftime lead.
The Knights' lead extended to eight points early in the second half before the Auggies went on a 12-1 run to take a 51-48 lead with 12:32 remaining. The game remained a tight one the rest of the way, capped by Augsburg's 7-0 run to take the lead for good in the closing minutes.
Augsburg shot 51.9 percent (27-of-52) from the field in the game -- its sixth straight game shooting 50 percent or better from the field. Augsburg is now 7-1 when shooting better than 50 percent on the season.
Augsburg connected on six 3-pointers in the game and outrebounded Carleton by a 34-20 margin. Augsburg also had 38 points in the paint, compared to 22 for the Knights. Augsburg claimed 11 offensive rebounds and scored 13 second-chance points in the game, compared to Carleton's nine points from just four offensive rebounds. Carleton shot 47.1 percent (24-of-51) from the field, also hitting six 3-pointers in the game.
Both teams return to action on Saturday (1/18) at 3 p.m., as Augsburg plays at Bethel and Carleton plays at Saint John's.
