BOXSCORE ARDEN HILLS, Minn. -- Despite 22 points from
Jessica Lillquist (SO, Sebeka, Minn.) and 19 points from
Jill Tichy (SR, Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka HS), the Augsburg College women's basketball team saw its four-game winning streak snapped in a 67-58 loss at Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference co-leader Bethel University on Saturday afternoon at the Robertson Center.
Lillquist scored 22 points with five rebounds and three steals, while Tichy scored 19 points with eight rebounds and a steal for Augsburg (7-5 overall, 4-5 MIAC). Lillquist scored in double figures for the third straight game, scoring 20-plus points for the second time in the span. Tichy, Augsburg's leading scorer with a 14.5 points per-game average, scored in double figures for the 11th time in Augsburg's 12 games this season.
Bethel (11-2 overall, 9-1 MIAC) was paced by Rachel Parupsky, who scored 24 points with 12 rebounds and two blocked shots. Hannah Niewald scored 12 points with five rebounds and three assists. Katelyn Vavra and Kalli Zimmerman scored nine points apiece for the Royals, with Zimmerman adding eight rebounds and three steals, and Vavra adding seven assists and three rebounds.
The hosts jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the first 3:33 of play, but Augsburg used a 12-3 run, with Tichy scoring eight points in the span, to tie the game at 14-14 with 10:47 left in the first half. Neither team led by more than three points the rest of the first half, with Bethel taking a 29-28 halftime advantage.
There were 11 ties and 12 lead changes in the game, with neither team leading by more than five points until the game's final minutes. Leading 54-53, the Royals scored six straight points in a 35-second span, with four coming at the free-throw line, to take a 60-53 lead with 3:25 left. The Royals extended the lead to its largest margin of nine points at the end.
Augsburg shot 42.9 percent (24-of-56) from the field, but connected on just 2-of-11 from three-point range and 8-of-17 (47.1 percent) from the free-throw line. Meanwhile, Bethel connected on 44.0 percent (22-of-50) from the field, and while hitting just 3-of-11 from three-point range, the Royals converted 20-of-30 (66.7 percent) from the free-throw line. Bethel outrebounded Augsburg by a 39-34 margin.
Jenna Orth (SO, Melrose, Minn.),
Marie Fitzgerald (SO, Fort Atkinson, Wis.) and
Bridget Kopp (SO, St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) scored four points each for the Auggies, with Fitzgerald adding six rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals.
Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Monday (1/20) at 5:45 p.m., hosting MIAC co-leader Saint Mary's at Si Melby Hall. It will be the second game of a three-game stretch where the Auggies will play three of the top four teams in the MIAC standings.
