Second-half Auggie rally falls short at St. Thomas

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Joey Sonnenfeld (JR, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) caught three second-half touchdown passes from Ayrton Scott (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS), but their team's comeback fell short, as Augsburg College dropped a 45-27 decision to the University of St. Thomas in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game on Saturday afternoon at O'Shaughnessy Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• St. Thomas, ranked No. 25 in the latest D3football.com national poll and No. 21 in the latest American Football Coaches Association Division III national poll, scored the first 35 points of the game, eventually building a 45-7 advantage late in the third quarter before the Auggies scored the final three touchdowns of the game.
• St. Thomas outgained Augsburg by a 477-330 margin in the game. The Tommies had 283 rushing yards and 194 passing yards, while the Auggies had 181 passing yards and 149 rushing yards.

• Scott put the Auggies on the board with a five-yard touchdown run -- his seventh rushing touchdown of the season -- with 32 seconds left in the first half.
• Sonnenfeld caught a career-high three touchdowns from Scott -- a 46-yard reception with 1:19 left in the third quarter, a four-yard pass 13 seconds into the fourth quarter, and a 16-yard reception with 3:05 left in the game.
• Sonnenfeld caught six passes for 105 yards to lead the Auggies. Scott completed 16-of-31 passing for 181 yards, with three touchdowns against one interception. Scott also rushed 17 times for 73 yards.
• Jerise Washington (SR, Roseville, Minn./Mounds View HS) rushed 19 times for 90 yards, while catching three passes for 18 yards.
• Hunter Friesen (FY, Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) caught three passes for 27 yards. Scott Bossard (JR, North Branch, Minn.) caught three passes for 25 yards.
• Kicker Ryan Mestnik (SR, Prior Lake, Minn.) converted a successful onside kick early in the fourth quarter, ricocheting the ball off a St. Thomas player, which allowed the Auggies to recover.

• Defensively, Felix Coleman (SR, Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS) led the way for the Auggies with 12 tackles (eight solo), including a tackle for-loss and a pass breakup. Bryce Nelson (JR, New Brighton, Minn./St. Anthony Village HS) had 10 tackles (eight solo), with a tackle for-loss.
• Alan Medina-Gonzalez (JR, Woodbury, Minn./Tartan HS) recorded seven tackles (four solo), with a forced fumble. Mykar Groves (JR, West St. Paul, Minn./Simley HS) had six tackles (two solo).
• Denzel Anderson (JR, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) collected his second interception of the season for the Auggies.


BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Sonnenfeld's 105 receiving yards marked his eighth 100-yard-plus receiving game in his two seasons as an Auggie.
• Washington eclipsed the 1,500 mark for career rushing yardage. He now has 1,578 rushing yards on 297 career carries.

• Coleman now has 254 career tackles (148 solo), with 7.5 career tackles for-loss.

FOR THE FOES
• Nick Waldvogel scored three rushing touchdowns in the first half, en route to gaining 106 yards on nine carries. He also caught five passes for 38 yards.
• Matt O'Connell completed 16-of-26 passes for 150 yards, with a touchdown pass against an interception. He also rushed four times for 23 yards and a touchdown.
• Pete Fitzsimmon completed a receiver-option pass for a touchdown to Jack Gilliland, a 38-yarder late in the first quarter. Fitzsimmon caught four passes for 33 yards in the game, while Gilliland caught three passes for 84 yards.
• Jack Kaiser rushed 15 times for 85 yards.
• Tom Laventure and Tim McClanahan had eight tackles each for the Tommies, with LaVenture recording a sack and McClanahan recording a tackle for-loss.
• Mitch Hausman had 1.5 sacks for the Tommies, while Kyle Coyne recorded an interception, fumble recovery and pass breakup.
