Cobbers pull away in 2nd half for win over Auggies

MINNEAPOLIS -- Ayrton Scott (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) threw for 337 yards and two touchdowns for Augsburg College, but visiting Concordia College-Moorhead pulled away in the second half for a 41-21 win over the host Auggies in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game on Saturday afternoon at Edor Nelson Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Concordia, ranked No. 21 in the latest D3football.com national poll and No. 23 in the latest American Football Coaches Association Division III national poll, pulled away from a 14-14 halftime tie in the second half, outscoring the Auggies 27-7 in the second half.
• Concordia put together 551 yards of total offense -- 378 rushing yards and 173 passing yards -- in the victory. Augsburg had 366 yards of total offense, but was limited to just 29 net rushing yards.

• Scott completed 23-of-40 passes for 337 yards with two touchdown passes -- a seven-yard completion to Joey Sonnenfeld (JR, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) in the second quarter and a 24-yard touchdown pass to Erickson Saye (JR, Brooklyn Center, Minn./Fridley HS) in the third quarter. 
• Sonnenfeld caught 10 passes for a career-high 186 yards, his third straight 100-yard-plus receiving game. The 10 receptions also tied a career-best for Sonnenfeld.
• After Concordia built a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter, Isiah Malone (FY, Brooklyn Center, Minn./Park Center HS) opened the scoring for the Auggies with an 89-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. 
• Another long kickoff return -- a 60-yarder by Undre Smith-Brewer (SO, St. Paul, Minn./Johnson HS), set up Scott's touchdown pass to Saye one play later, tying the score at 21-21 with 7:58 left in the third quarter.
• Jerise Washington (SR, Roseville, Minn./Mounds View HS) caught six passes for 81 yards, while rushing seven times for 17 yards. Saye caught three passes for 44 yards.

Defensively, Alan Medina-Gonzalez (JR, Woodbury, Minn./Tartan HS) led all players with 16 tackles (five solo), including a half-sack and 1.0 tackles for-loss. Felix Coleman (SR, Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS) had 12 tackles (seven solo), and Bryson Vasey (SO, Sebeka, Minn./United North Central HS) had 11 tackles, with 1.0 tackles for-loss.
• Marcus Buls (SR, Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus HS) had nine tackles (five solo), and Chris DeVet (SR, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) had nine tackles (one solo), with 1.5 sacks adn 2.0 tackles for-loss. Isaac Hove (FY, Burnsville, Minn.) collected an interception for the Auggies.


BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Sonnenfeld's 186 receiving yards marked his ninth 100-yard-plus receiving game in his two seasons as an Auggie. He now has 105 receptions for 1,686 yards and 21 touchdowns (fourth in school history) in his Auggie career.
• Washington eclipsed the 300 mark for career carries and 1,000-yard mark for career receiving yards on Saturday. He now has 304 rushes for 1,595 yards, to go along with 93 receptions for 1,010 yards, in his career. He now has 2,693 all-purpose yards (76.9 yards per-game) in his 35-game Augsburg career.

• Scott is now one completion shy of 500 on his career. In his 26 career games, Scott has completed 499-of-835 passes for 6,597 yards and 66 touchdowns against 35 interceptions.

FOR THE FOES
• Zach Southwick (SR, Byron, Minn.) scored three touchdowns for the Cobbers -- a 38-yard pass from Griffin Neal (SR, Fargo, N.D./Fargo South HS) in the second quarter, and a four-yard rushing touchdown and  13-yard rushing touchdown in the third quarter. Southwick rushed 10 times for 71 yards and caught three passes for 81 yards.
• Alex McLean rushed for two touchdowns -- a two-yarder in the first quarter and a 60-yarder in the fourth quarter -- accumulating 119 rushing yards on 17 carries.
• Quarterback Neal rushed nine times for 56 yards while completing 12-of-18 passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns against an interception. He threw a 23-yard touchdown to Rick Hutchinson (JR, Detroit Lakes, Minn) in the fourth quarter.
• Mitch Tauer (SR, Atwater, Minn./ACGC HS) had six tackles (four solo), including a tackle for-loss, for the Cobbers, while Levi Hintermeister (JR, Garfield, Minn./Brandon HS) had five tackles (four solo) and two forced fumbles. Monay Swafford (JR, San Diego, Calif./Mount Miguel HS) had five tackles (three solo) and an interception.
• Dan Berdan (SR, Ortonville, Minn.) and Nate Adams (SR, Litchfield, Minn.) each had a sack, with Adams adding a fumble recovery. Erik Bye (JR, Moorhead, Minn.) added an interception.
• Cobber defensive players claimed seven pass breakups in the game.
