Auggies strike early in 38-20 win over Oles

NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- With its three offensive stars each claiming big games, the Augsburg College football team built a 28-7 halftime lead, en route to a 38-20 triumph over St. Olaf College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Saturday afternoon at Manitou Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg outgained St. Olaf by a 436-289 margin with a balanced offensive attack. The Auggies rushed for 194 yards while passing for 242 yards as a team. 
• Augsburg scored on its first three drives in the first quarter to build a 21-0 lead, eventually leading 28-7 at halftime. After scoring following the opening kickoff, the Auggie defense helped to set up the next two scores. Augsburg stopped St. Olaf on downs at the Auggie 14-yard line and scored on its next drive, and an interception by Mykar Groves (JR, West St. Paul, Minn./Simley HS) gave the Auggies the ball at the Ole 25-yard line, setting up the next Augsburg score.
• Quarterback Ayrton Scott (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) completed 16-of-27 passing with two first-quarter touchdowns -- both to 
Joey Sonnenfeld (JR, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) -- while rushing 20 times for 89 yards and two scores.
• Sonnenfeld caught seven passes for 111 yards, his fourth straight 100-yard-plus receiving game. He caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from Scott on the Auggies' first drive of the game, then scored late in the first quarter on a 25-yard touchdown reception from Scott.
• Jerise Washington (SR, Roseville, Minn./Mounds View HS) rushed 17 times for 105 yards, including a 68-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. He also caught four passes for 77 yards.
• Scott claimed his eighth and ninth rushing touchdowns of the season on a 12-yarder midway through the second quarter, and on a five-yarder late in the third quarter.
• Kicker Ryan Mestnik (SR, Prior Lake, Minn.) connected on his first collegiate field goal early in the fourth quarter, a 33-yarder.
• Defensively, Isaac Hove (FY, Burnsville, Minn.) had seven tackles (six solo) and a 64-yard interception, setting up the Auggies' drive for Mestnik's fourth-quarter field goal.
• R.J. Cervenka (JR, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) had seven tackles (five solo), while Felix Coleman (SR, Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS) and Alan Medina-Gonzalez (JR, Woodbury, Minn./Tartan HS) had six tackles apiece.

• Chris DeVet (SR, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) had a quarterback sack and two tackles for-loss, while Clayton Byrd (FY, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) also had a sack.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Sonnenfeld's 111 receiving yards marked his 10th 100-yard-plus receiving game in his two seasons as an Auggie. He now has 112 receptions for 1,797 yards and 23 touchdowns (fourth in school history) in his Auggie career.
• Washington now has 2,875 all-purpose yards in his Augsburg career, a 79.9 yards-per-game average in 36 career games. He has 1,700 rushing yards on 321 carries with 20 touchdowns (second in school history) and 1,087 receiving yards on 97 catches with two touchdowns.

• With 347 yards of total offense, Scott edged closer to the 10,000-yard mark in his career, now with 9,482 yards -- with 6,839 passing yards (third in school history) and a school-record 2,643 rushing yards. In his 27 career games, Scott has now completed 515-of-862 passes for 6,839 yards and 68 touchdowns against 36 interceptions -- second in school history in passing touchdowns, third in school history in passing yardage and fourth in school history in passing attempts and completions. His 461 career rushing attempts are third-most in school history.
• DeVet now has 3.5 sacks on the season and 11.0 in his career. 


FOR THE FOES
• Nate Penz completed 15-of-28 passes for 149 yards and a touchdown, but had two interceptions and was sacked twice. He also rushed for a two-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.
• J.J. Strnad rushed 26 times for 134 yards, incluidng a 42-yard touchdown run late in the game.
• Joel Reinhardt caught three passes for 32 yards, including a 17-yard touchdown reception from Penz late in the first half. Alex Nelson caught five passes for 69 yards.
• Colin Brown recorded eight tackles (four solo) to lead the Oles, while Coleman Foley had seven tackles (six solo). Chad Wagner had six tackles (three solo), including a sack.
