Auggies open season with 2-0 win over SMU

BLAINE, Minn. -- Mack Ohnsted (JR, Vernon Hills, Ill./Adali E. Stevenson HS) and Evan Hesse (FY, Monticello, Minn./Palmer (Alaska) HS) scored first-period goals for Augsburg College, as the Auggies claimed a 2-0 win over Saint Mary's University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Showcase men's hockey game on Friday evening at the Schwan Super Rink.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Fredrik Melander (SO, Uppsala, Sweden/Trinity-Pawling Prep (N.Y.) HS), a transfer from Division I Sacred Heart playing his first game in goal for Augsburg, scored his first collegiate shutout, stopping all 20 shots he faced in the game.
• Ohnsted scored the first goal of the season for the Auggies at the 12:23 mark of the first period, scoring from Corbin Chapman (SO, Burnsville, Minn.) and Ben McClellan (SR, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS).
• Hesse scored his first collegiate goal with four seconds remaining in the first period, scoring from Zach Dick (SR, Grand Rapids, Minn.) and Drew Anderson (FY, Rochester, Minn./Century HS).
• Augsburg outshot Saint Mary's by a 28-20 margin. Nate Flynn (FY, Hastings, Minn.) had four shots-on-goal for Augsburg, while Dick, Anderson, Chapman and Dylan Meier (SO, Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista HS) had three shots each.


BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Augsburg outshot Saint Mary's by a 23-11 margin through the first two periods -- an 11-3 advantage in the first period and a 12-8 margin in the second period. 
• Playing in his 51st career game, Ohnsted now has nine goals and 27 assists for 36 career points.
• Melander, who was 0-3-0 in seven career games at Sacred Heart, claimed his first collegiate victory in goal.
