Auggies shine in 5-1 win at Bethel

BLAINE, Minn. -- Ben McClellan (SR, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) scored a goal and added two assists, and Mack Ohnsted (JR, Vernon Hills, Ill./Adali E. Stevenson HS) had a goal and assist, as the Augsburg College men's hockey team opened its 2014-15 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference campaign with a 5-1 win over host Bethel University on Friday evening at the Schwan Super Rink.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg built a 3-0 lead after two periods, and after Bethel scored early in the third period, added two more goals for the 5-1 decision.
• Dylan Meier (SO, Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista HS) opened the scoring with a goal 5:40 into the first period, assisted by McClellan and Zach Dick (SR, Grand Rapids, Minn.). McClellan added a power-play goal 2:05 later, assisted by Dick and Lucas Hendrickson (JR, Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS).
• Augsburg made the score 3-0 with six seconds left in the second period, as Max Pernhem (FY, Stockholm, Sweden/Dragonskolan) scored his first collegiate goal, assisted by McClellan and Evan Hesse (FY, Monticello, Minn./Palmer (Alaska) HS).
• The Auggies added two goals in the third period. Rory Vesel (SO, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) scored on the power play from Tom Kuhn (JR, Hastings, Minn.) and Ohnsted at the 13:45 mark, and Ohnsted capped the scoring with a goal from Eli May (FY, Eagan, Minn.) and Nate Flynn (FY, Hastings, Minn.) at the 17:15 mark.
• John Bretzman (SR, Mendota Heights, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS), making his first start of the season in goal, had 17 saves to pick up the win.


BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Augsburg outshot Bethel by a 26-18 margin.
• Augsburg went 2-for-4 on the power play, while Bethel was 0-of-5 on the power play.
• McClellan cracked the 60-point plateau for his career. In 77 career games, he now has 34 goals and 28 assists for 62 points.
• Ohnsted now has 10 goals and 28 assists for 38 points in 53 career games.


FOR THE FOES
• J.T. Walters scored the lone goal of the game for Bethel, a goal 1:18 into the third period, assisted by Travis Payne and Michael Chuinard.
• Matt Arnold had 21 saves in goal for the Royals
