Augsburg three game win streak snapped with loss to Hamline

BOXSCORE ST. PAUL, Minn. --  Jill Tichy (SR, Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka HS) scored a game-high 20 points but it wasn't enough as the Augsburg College women's basketball team suffered a hard fought 67-62 loss to Hamline University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night at Hutton Arena.

Augsburg (11-11 overall, 8-11 MIAC) was led by Tichy's 20 points and five rebounds. The scoring effort marked the fifth time this season that Tichy has scored 20-plus points and the 19th time this season that she has scored in double figures.

Also scoring in double figures for the Auggies was Marie Fitzgerald (SO, Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson HS), Jenna Orth (SO, Melrose, Minn./Melrose HS) and Jessica Lillquist (SO, Sebeka, Minn.). Fitzgerald finished with 13 points, while Orth and Lillquist recorded 10 points apiece. Lillquist recorded a team-high eight rebounds, while Orth went 4-for-4 from the field to claim her third double digit scoring effort in her last four games.

Hamline (7-15 overall, 6-13 MIAC) finished with two players in double figures led by Jordan Sammons, who finished with 19 points and eight rebounds.

In a game that was a battle from start to finish, it was no suprise that neither team ever led by more than eight points during the contest that featured 12 tied scores and 13 lead changes.

After leading 32-25 at the half, the Pipers were able to tie things back up just three and a half minutes into the second frame. The two teams continued to trade baskets and Augsburg found itself leading 59-58 after a pair of Tichy free throws with just 2:34 left in the action. Hamline's Sammons hit a 3-pointer on the next possession and the Pipers were able to convert on 6-of-6 from the free throw line down the stretch to seal the Hamline victory.

For the game, Augsburg shot 46.2 percent (24-of-52) from the field, while Hamline converted on 42.1 percent (24-of-57) of its shots. The Pipers grabbed a narrow 36-34 advantage on the boards but the difference in the game came down to the free throw line. Augsburg and Hamline claimed an identical 24 made baskets and seven 3-pointers but Hamline was able to convert on 12-of-20, while Augsburg only made 7-of-14.

Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Saturday (2/15) when the Auggies host Bethel University in a men's and women's doubleheader. Women's action is scheduled to tip-off at 1 p.m. and the men will begin at 3 p.m.
